To me, Darth Vader is...

And the creepy part about JEJ in the Lion King is that he says this.

"You are my son."

Sounds a lot like "I am your father."

 

Does anybody consider the possibility that some fans may be underrating Prowse's performance?

I think some scenes -where Vader doesn't speak- are very good because of Prowse's contribution.

Case in point 1: Vader's entrance in ANH (his first scene).

Case in point 2: Vader wandering Death Star corridors while Obi-Wan is searching for the tractor beam.

As Prowse said -read quote some posts above- the walk was one the things that decided the character. The other was -obviously- his voice. I don't think people who doesn't speak English has a very different conception of Vader's character just because don't hearing Jone's voice. The character is far more than just a very good voice.

 

Exactly, CIDLORD. I am Spanish and I've never heard James Earl Jone's voice. But I can assure you that Darth Vader doesn't lose his wickedness and strength with another voice that isn't James' one.

_Padme_, I agree. Being Puerto Rican I was raised with a BetaMax copy of ANH in Spanish. Vader still scared the bejeezus out of me when he spoke in a Spanish voice. Its been a decade since I've seen the OT in Spanish, I would like to see it again. . ."¡Usa la Fuerza, Luke! Luke, YO soy to padre. . . Nooooo! Eso no es cierto! Es imposible"
I would like to know who were the voice actors for that Spanish version of the OT, they were pretty good.

I was a kid when SW came out and didn't realize DV was 2 people--a guy in a suit AND someone else as a voice.

Found out later about it, and always enjoyed seeing James Earl Jones perform in other movies. He has one of the most distinctive voices I've ever heard.

 

I voted for Jones since the voice is Vader's most dominant feature.

if david prowse died tomorrow someone else could easily put on the suit and play the man in black, in fact someone else probably will be in the suit: hayden christensen
now, if james earl jones died there would be no way to replace him. his voice IS darth vader, it makes and breaks that character.

 

James Earl Jones is the only Darth Vader. You can't help but think of the voice when you think of Vader.

 

All of them. All aspects are important. I mean, yeah, you couldn't have Vadie without a coold voice, but could you have him without a big strong body in a black suit? All the parts of him (pardon the pun) are necessary.

Prowse provides the body language, Anderson provides the powerful fighting moments but it is James Earl Jones who elevates Darth Vader from a stock evil warrior to one of the great cinema icons of all time.

 

The Voice.

LucasArts' official Vader-voice is Scott Lawrence (if I remember correctly) and although good, he's not James Earl Jones. There's something missing. The Authority perhaps?

The thers give the character the presence, but its Jones' that gives Vader that extra edge and makes him a very believable villain.

 

To me, Darth Vader is:

JEJ
David Prowse
Bob Anderson
Sebastian Shaw
Jake Lloyd
Hayden Christensen

They all play a part in bringing this character to life. But I mostly see JEJ and Hayden now.

 

James Earl Jones most of all, cause he just sounds so evil - which definetely suits Vader!!!
Might change my mind when Episode III is out, Hayden Christensen might be able to pull off a good Vader style - or maybe I'm just being too hopeful!
