Do we know this is actually a lie?

This may be kind of an overstatement, but is Obi-Wan really lying?

I think Han believed this when he said it... until he started seeing some of the stuff that Obi-Wan, Darth Vader, and (later) Luke could do using the Force.

I think Palpatine and Luke both believed what they were saying here. Vader may or may not have believed his line, but it was more of a sales pitch that an outright lie.

eht, as the OP on this thread, I agree with ALL of your comments except this one. Here is what the ANH script has to say about this line:

HAN: Han Solo. I'm captain of the Millennium Falcon. Chewie here tells
me you're looking for passage to the Alderaan system.

BEN: Yes, indeed. If it's a fast ship.

HAN: Fast ship? You've never heard of the Millennium Falcon?

BEN: Should I have?

Ben reacts to Solo's stupid attempt to impress them with
obvious misinformation.

 

Yes, I think that note ("Ben reacts to Solo's stupid attempt to impress them with
obvious misinformation") is in the Annotated Screenplays too. But I wondered why it says that, and whether this being obvious misinformation really comes across that way in the film itself. It seemed like bragging to me, but not really a lie... so I remember being a little surprised when I read that in the book (Annotated Screenplays).

And I know this is PT, but it's the biggest lie of the entire Saga IMO: "I love Democracy. I love the Republic. The power you give me, I will lay down when this crisis has abated"

 

I think we can all agree Obi-Wan was basically the Jon Lovitz of this galaxy when it came to lying.

 

Agreed with both of these, especially the second one. It being from the PT was the only thing that stopped me from posting it myself.

Regarding the first one, I think Obi-Wan could have made it potentially true by saying "Your father would have (or should have) wanted you to have this when you were old enough". Chances are, if things had gone differently with Anakin, he would have wanted his son to receive his lightsaber. But just adding that distinction could have opened up another bunch of questions from Luke that Obi-Wan wasn't ready to deal with yet.

This thread has made me realize that an overarching theme of the saga is lies. In the PT, it was about Palpatine's lies and deception and in the OT, it was the lies to Luke

 

"What I told you was true, from a certain point of view."

 

I never realized this before, but after seeing the list I totally agree. Perhaps the list of things Obi-Wan said that are true would be a lot shorter?

Also Han was promised rewards and got what looked like really big legos, so the might be a lie too, unless legos are an accepted form of currency in the Empire.
