Although my regard for the films in question is fairly high, I actually think that both pictures are wildly overrated. I essentially view both as being very good, but not great. This is difficult, because I think that the artistic merit of the two movies is approximately equal, but the endlessness of ROTK's denouement forces me to pick "Braveheart" (not by much, though).

I have to go with William Friedkin's "The French Connection", which rivlas Beineix's "Diva", Yates' "Bullitt", Miller's "The Road Warrior", Spielberg's "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and Friedkin's own "To Live and Die in L.A.", for the best car-chase sequence in film history. In addition, the film is capped by two sensational performances from Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider. Zemeckis' "Forrest Gump" is an admirable film, very ambitious in its scope, but pales to the raw, gritty immediacy of Friedkin's picture.

I just watched Rain Man tonight, and while I am still very bitter that Forrest Gump beat it out in our little tournament by GK's tie-breaking vote, I have to give it my vote in this instance.
