Oooo, a toughie. ROTK or Titanic? C'mon, you all know as a stand alone film ROTK is not really Best Picture calibre, and won because it was a way to honour the whole trilogy. On the other hand, Titanic is a great film despite the backlash popular nowadays. That being the case I'll vote for Titanic. I know its going to get creamed here but that won't bother me. The LOTR is great too, as a trilogy.

Driving Miss Daisy and Ordinary People? Who cares? :p
But I'll vote for Driving Miss Daisy, just for that whole Redford beating Scorcese thing.

Ugh. Titanic should crush ROTK, as the latter isn't even in the same galaxy in terms of quality. The former is a masterpiece, and the latter is just overdone (among other things). Thank you for the mention a couple posts ago about ROTK only winning because of the trilogy itself. Lost in Translation was a far superior picture, and deserved Best Picture of 2003. Now that would have been a tough vote for me, and I honestly don't know which one I would have chosen between the two. As it is, it's easy.

    Titanic.

    Ordinary People.

Ordinary People is an excellent, sometimes devastating film, and is one of the best movies of the 1980s. Few people have seen it (it isn't widely available on DVD, and isn't marketed), and it's not what you would call a popcorn movie. What it is, however, is a window into the lives of a family being gradually torn apart by a tragedy they don't want to deal with. Robert Redford's directorial debut, and probably his best overall to date as a director.

I agree with KW about Ordinary People. You should seek out a copy (even on VHS ) and watch it!

edit: I just checked and amazon has it on dvd for $11.99.

Also, Timothy Hutton won Best Supporting Actor, Redford won Best Director, and Mary Tyler Moore, IMO, should have won Best Actress.

What a shame about Titanic. The superior film in every way. And Ordinary People for that matter, which deserved the win here.

Driving Miss Daisy winning Best Picture instead of Do the Right Thing is an absolute tragedy.
