And the overrated SW soundtrack strikes again. How predictable.

The Empire Strikes Back. I may do a full write-up when it wins, but for now, here's my logic.

John Williams is the best film composer of all time.
The Empire Strikes Back is Williams' best score.
The Empire Strikes Back is the best score of all time.

Not really, I think ESB is better and here is why.

The two soundtracks are different yet similar, they both have the general Star Wars feel too them.

I find that SW is a good soundtrack but is light and generally in major keys. It is as good as ESB, however I find that ESB is a much darker soundtrack, including more minor keys as well as some major evil, dark music.

I prefer Evil, dark music, to a lighter soundtrack.

And that is why I vote for

    The Empire Strikes Back

When you're talking about originality and historical impact then Star Wars would win. But if you're talking about the better listen and overall emotional impact then The Empire Strikes Back wins. I prefer the emotional better listen.

In addition to the emotional impact that it carries, I find ESB to be the most mythic score of the entire saga.

If any of the SW scores are overrated it's ROTS.

    Star Wars

The Empire Strikes Back is a wonderful score, but there's so much more effort put into the original. It's subtler where subtlety is called for and brassier where brassiness is called for. ESB is a series of beautiful but sometimes meaningless cues (fortunately, a good twenty minutes of it were cut from the film). Besides, would it be as spectacular without the themes of the original? Some of the best moments involve the Force theme, the Rebel fanfare, etc. I suppose I am biased by sound quality a little, as Star Wars survives as a much stronger recording than Empire, though its master tapes may have sounded just as good.
