Event Horizon was a pretty solid sci-fi horror flick- though it's obviously nowhere near, say, Alien in terms of overall quality- and was certainly decent enough to warrant inclusion.

Now if only they'd release the damn extended cut of the film I've been waiting 8 years for the DVD of...

    (note: I didn't nominate it, however ;)

I've had to vote for a couple I'd rather not have and against a couple that shouldn't be going out first round in this one:(

Voted for Bracket #4. It wasn't has hard for as as Bracket #3, but the Mad Max vs. Tron certainly made me pause to reflect. Two oldies but goodies.

I find round 4 the easiest of choices so far.

Toughest one here is Alien III vs. The Fifth Element, which I refused to even vote on, because neither one of them belong anywhere near a 'best of' list.

Well, Goldenthal's score for Alien III was great . . . so perhaps I should have voted for that one, solely on the merits of the score.

Well, too late now. Never mind.

Seriously, AI vs. Back to the Future was tough, but come on, AI is maybe one of the top ten movies ever . . . :p

Considering that my DVD of Equilibrium says "Forget The Matrix" on it (a quote from a reviewer) #1 should be easy. :p

    >>but come on, AI is maybe one of the top ten movies ever . . .<<

...until it decided it would be best to have, like, 3 or 4 endings one after the other, all progresisvely worse than the previous one. Perhaps Jackson was merely making an homage to AI... ;)

I've been making that argument for years. If its a blatant enough rip that it has the audacity to say it on the cover then you might as well just stick with the original.

Unless that isn't what you meant....

    Which it probably wasn't.

That last vote between Robocop and Hitchhikers Guide was tough, as it did not specify which version of Hitchhikers, the recent (thrashed) version, or the original 1980 (superior) miniseries. For lack of knowing, I had to choose Robo.

Mini-series would be ineligible for this wouldn't they?

Yes, it was decided that there wouldn't be mini's or telefilms.

Hmm... the best LOTR film or the awesome villian performance by Frank Langella... that's the hardest choice this round...

..ok, ok, Gwildor's bad puns seals the deal for TTT ;)

That's what I said. But in place of "best LOTR film" I used the phrase "weakest LOTR film." :p

After we do this initial voting through the eight brackets, what do you guys think about changing the time limit on the voting? Say we do a 24 hour limit on the weekdays and a 48 hour limit on the weekends? That would speed things up.

Also, Minority Report should not have gone. [face_plain]

    mad max and equilibrium gone...?

wow, I missed that round of voting, I wonder if one vote would have changed any of those out comes.

I didn't expect to see a lot of these movies go out this early on bracket 1 and on.
