Tournament Suggestion Thread

Best movie would definitely have to be broken out by category. Best Comedy, Best Drama, Best Sci-Fi, Best Action, Best Love Story would be some I could think of right off the bat.

 

Tobey-Wan is right, movies would have to broken down into seperate categories.

Padawan915 also had a good idea, best all time video game. I think I'll back that idea for the next tournament.

 

Thanks Neel. If you consider it, we've done a music and a TV one, why not move into videogames? I'm sure we can get a good list of videogames going.

Video games was the topic of the first tournament last fall, IIRC.

The greatest person idea is interesting, but the criteria is wide open for debate.

 

Nuts about the videogames one already being used. And the most influential figure one is very subjective, it can't be done on an objective basis, IMO.


How about greatest sports figures? That could be interesting.

 

Well, they are all subjective.

Sports figures or athletes narrows it down. That is intriguing. (It greatly reduces controversy over religion vs. science, etc. that would come up in an overall "person" tourney.)

 

I can come up with a rough list of influential athletes/sports figures in a day or two. Not terribly hard, then it could be refined and form a final list for a bracket.

Well still would like to see best comic book character. You've got classics like: Spider-man, Batman, Robin, Superman, the Flash, Captain America, The Hulk, Wolverine, The joker, Lex Luthor,Green lantern, Wonder Woman, Thor, Iron Man, etc.

 

I'd love to see either person, or some form of the movie thing. Best movie of all time would be good, but I guess you people don't like broad topics... Also, I think that we would have to disqualify Star Wars. Just not fair to have it in on a SW site.

 

Speaking of athletes, you can always use the ESPN SportsCentury top 50 athletes of all time list to help choose from.

 

We could do Star Wars characters, there's well over enough if you use the EU.

 

The first tournament was actually limited to Nintendo video games.

I think SW characters is a good idea.

 

How about... Movies! It could be movies from the past year, decade, or all time, or something else, but I think it should be movies!!!

Movies would be tough if you didn't narrow it down at all. There's just no way to include everyone's favorite film.

You could narrow it down by genre, or do something like the last 64 "best picture" Oscar winners.

Or maybe, since that would include a lot of oldies that people might not be too familiar with, you could start with the last 32 winners, then open it up for nominations. I would exclude Star Wars films though just to make it a little more interesting.

 

I agree that a movie tournament would be great. May I suggest narrowing it down to films released between 1990 and today? That would make for a more accessible tournament than an Oscar or genre specific tournament, IMHO. And with so many popular films to choose from, it could go well beyond 64 films.

 

True. You could do 128 and do 4 matchups per day in the first round, which would get it moving quicker. I don't know about starting at 1990 though, I think I'd almost rather do a genre specific tournament. If we did limit it by time I'd rather start at 1980.

I would probably rather see a broad subject tournament, as there is less a chance of a a blowout like we had this time. Because people like different things, we'll probably have more fierce battles. So, I propose either we do people or movies, without narrowing it at all. But that's just me.

No wait - Here's a spectacular idea that would solve all our problems: we have a tournament to see what we should have in the next tournament.

b. All-Time Comedies.

c. All Movies since 1990 (except SW) or 1980 or 1970...

 

A, but C would probably be pretty good also, I'd probably be leaning torward either 1970 or 1980 if we chose C.
