TPM Moves Down to #2 for Highest Opening Wednesday Gross

A little "TPM in the News" tidbit:

Return of the King made $34,125,000 yesterday, beating TPM's $28,500,000 for the highest opening Wednesday Gross. AOTC opened on a Thursday, making 30 million.

 

Of all the movies to break a SW record, I'm glad it was a film of such high caliber. LOTR:ROTK was a great film, imho.

Now, the empire (of movie franchises) strikes back on Wednesday May 25th, 2005...

 

I haven't seen LOTR, any of them. Not saying I totally hate LOTR, but it's really starting to annoy me

 

Yah let me say I am glad it was not Titanic or some crap like Pirates of the Caribbean that beat Star Wars. At least it was a film that deserves it.

 

Well, it had to happen some time. Good to hear that it was a Tolkien flick that did it, and not the latest Vin Diesel movie or something.

We must buy multiple tickets opening day to beat $34 million.....or else all will be lost.

 

I saw TPM 3 times opening day and AOTC twice. I have every intention of seeing Ep3 at least twice opening day.

 

Considering that it's more likely Episode III will open on a Thursday than a Wednesday (if the past trend holds), I think ROTK's Wednesday record is safe for the moment.

If this thread is about Lucas not making as much money comparatively, shouldn't you be using your immature dollar signs for Jack$on, not Luca$?

Anyway, someone with too much free time found out that TPM does keep its record, from a certain point of view. Somewhere in the distance, a bird chirps.

How much does TPM's 28.5 million come out to in today's dollars once it's adjusted for inflation?

 

There's always inflation, but it's been kept in check the last few years.......make that decades.

In other words, not much difference.

Seriously, please do. I'm sick of all this fanboy rubbish about Luca$, Jack$on, the Wachow$ki$, Jame$ Cameron, Franci$ Coppola, Kevin $mith and $pielberg. What do you want these people do to, make movies that LOSE money?

I'm very thankful that nowhere in my full name is there an S. People will actually have to critique my movies and not resort to unsubstantiated name-calling.

The Phantom Menace held this record for 4.5 years. Pretty good if you ask me.

 

I understand that if you add up the theatre count for TPM to compare with ROTK, TPM could have grossed $33.9 million for a Wednesday. I guess ROTK is indeed King.

As I understand it, TPM actually held on to the "average gross per theater" record it had. It was just the total opening day gross that LOTR beat it out on.

 

ROTK has a lot going for it:

-extremely positive critical reviews

-positive word-of-mouth from moviegoers

-a record breaking opening to excentuate media hype, which was already highly positive

The ONLY thing I can see that this film has going against it is its 3+ hour running length.

What I'm getting at is that the highest Wednesday opening might not be the only record it beats TPM at.

 

I don't foresee ROTK beating TPM.

Heck, I don't even see it beating Spider-Man.

I do think though it will do the best of the three films, and probably has a decent shot at beating Jurassic Park.
