Thank god it's just a test.
    Cause it looks like crap.
    Typical ILM animation quality...yeeeaaak!

A fake by ILM...? What fanboy has the technology to do animation that good, and with a moving camera?

I'm sure it's possible but why bother - if you're that good at CG animation, why not just make your own movie!

Hmmmm. Why's the running time at the top left of the "screen" at the seven minute mark, if this is just a singular screen test?

Well...at least the purists will be happy...just like in the cartoons, bits and pieces of the transformer just disappear into other bits ;)

Uh me...and half the people down at fanfilms and cgtalk.com
Also the animation was horribly crap. The rendering and texturing were passable, but as for the actual animation......poor.

Why's the running time at the top left of the "screen" at the seven minute mark

I guess we can just either assume it's a rough cut of the film and this is seven minutes into it...or it's the ILM 'daylies'.

I visit the FanFilm boards a bit and I've seen alot of the stuff posted there and yes, I'm completely amazed most of the time (though I can't claim to have seen any of your work SoE - What would you have done that I may have seen?) but... I still haven't seen anything that looks that good in any fanfilm.

Maybe I'm easily impressed but giggled like a schoolgirl, did I when I saw the 'Optimus' test.

Did you ever see the ILM tests for the dinosaurs in Jurrasic Park - they were shocking compared to what made it into the final film. ;)

Just outta curiosity, what is it about the animations of these that makes them 'poor' SOE?

There is no indication of weight/mass in the object.
It's one of the main flaws with ILM's animation department...in fact I don't think I've ever seen a convincing animation by them since Jurassic Park; and that was a different team.

when I saw the 'Optimus' test.

I hope you don't refer to this test:

'Cause that's a tiny project one of our guys at CGtalk did in his spare time.

    Before SoE jumps in,

The truck one is ok, although the "skin" of the model seems too clean. I realise it's an early test, but it doesn't look like metal.

As for the animation, the one point that stuck with me for the car, is that it lacks mass. It just doesn't move like it's made from a few tons of steel.

Once again me and S_M are on the same frequency.

I just checked the truck link that Johnnage posted. Yeah, that's just one of our lads.
Not ILM...nothing to do with the film.

    Ahhh, got you. :)
That was my major problem with animated Yoda. He felt far too flat, and no mass (like you said).

What are the Transformers cartoons like? Are the animations at all like them in terms of movement etc?

When you say that the transformers animation shows no indication of mass etc...

Perhaps they're made of an amazing alien alloy from Cybertron, and not steel....

I thought they were fun to see. And yeah the Optimus test is by a guy on 3dblasphemy.com

I knew SOE would go off his nut- he's got an eye for this stuff.

    HeHe...yeah.
It's just that mass/weight always seams to be something ILM overlooks. I know it's not confirmed that the car animation is an ILM clip but if it is then it certainly fits into ILM's crappy collection; that's getting bigger every year.
Heck, when that car unfolds into a massive robot it still looks like I could kick the crap out of it. DOSN'T LOOK HEAVY!!!
If only WETA digital were doing it...*sigh*

hey it fooled me. I'm the average joe moviegoer who doesn't notice.

But hey- it's a test probably just o determine the transforming animation out.

I was referring to that test... I stand corrected and impressed; that was the shot that sold me on the idea of live action Transformers. Does that guy do anything professionally? If not, he should.

And if you can do the same SoE, I'd like to see it. I've watched the Knighthood trailer and am assuming you did the CG work. Do you just do lightsabres and muzzle flashes or are you an animator also?

I'm sure he does do pro work. Most of the guys do.
As for me, I'm not much of an animator, well I'm good at it but I don't enjoy it so no...you probably wont see my animation for a while now.
    I'm more of a compositor at heart...and a 3D coder.
