Have any of you guys gone to Tunisia, specifically to see the filming locations for ANH? If so, I just wondered what you managed to see, and how difficult it was to do. Any recommendations?

A while back I managed to persuade the missus to go on holiday there, and we found a safari trip that took us to the Lars Homestead (which was a dodgy hotel found at the end of a very perilous dirt track!) They still had some of the set dressings in place from TPM!!

Would love to go back again one day specifically to see more!!

A friend went, I'll ask him.

I got him to get me some geuine Tatooine sand. It's the town your travel through to get to the filming location for Lars Homestead.
I have genuine sand from Tatooine. I love saying that. :)

Oh yes, I have some sand! We also went on an old train that was used for the filing on one of the Indiana Jones films, went right into the heart of some desert canyons that looked just like those for the R2/Jawa confrontation. Breathtaking. I suspect they weren't the actual ones, but they might not have been too far away!

This basic trip is available on most package holidays to Tunisia, so you don't need to hire a car/get a gps etc. I'm guessing that the gps/hire car is the only way to go if you want to see everything.

Just found this guy's site. Looks like he found the lot!!

My Mrs went on holiday to Tunisia, but the only place she went was the Lars house.
She brought me back some genuine tatooine sand though ;)

The R2D2 canyon is the same one thats used in Raiders of the Lost Ark :)

We went on holiday to somewhere in southern Portugal and we went to a valley that was supposedly used in Star Wars. I never found out what scene or even which film was filmed there but the place did look very like Tatooine.

Cool! I had no idea that was there. Is that visible on the Raiders dvd?

Tunisia wasn't the only Tatooine location. In ROTJ, the Sarlacc Pit sequence was actually done at Buttercup Valley in California/Arizona..see the IMDB info here.

My mother went to Tunisia, she didn't go anywhere near the SW locations, but managed to get robbed, arrested and lost numerous times. She said it was a nice place though, but they all spoke french, so we ended up running a huge phone bill up translating things, but it seems there is no french for 'tofu', which proved a major setback, unless you are vegan and enjoy large amounts of toffee.

Tofu is a product made of soya. I think. Basically, imagine jelly which is tasteless but can be used with many other foods where for some reason it develops a flavour. You can breadcrumb it, batter it, make it taste like chicken (or so it said, if it was, it was a bloody funny chicken) or other meats.

You can eat it raw, or cooked. It can be put in salads, or through a blender to make a smoothie type thing. It is very high in protein. Supposedly it is good for you.

Yes, I have tried it but I didn't like it. Gimme Italian, Curry, Chinese, in fact most other foods anyday.

I DIDN'T COME HERE TO LEARN!

Every time I learn some thing new, it pushes old stuff out of my brian...like that time I learned how to make wine and I forgot how to drive!

Me and the mrs went to Tunisia on honeymoon and took a trip to see the lars homestead, got genuine tattoine sand as well, the mrs didn't seem to be as exicted about it as me. We also went to el djem where part of Gladiator was shot, and onto carthage.

Me and my family are looking at going next August to the Hotel Saharah Beach.

What sort of immunisations are you looking at before you go.

and most importantly, do they do some sort of 1 day Star Wars trip?
