Saw this on Saturday. Everybody had a bad day, included the scriptwriter and the director. The only good thing? Sturges greatly liked McQueen and Bronson, who had supporting roles, and cast them in "The Magnificent Seven". McQueen is good in this and Bronson not bad.

The Victor Fleming biography I'm currently reading goes into considerable detail about the torrid affair Fleming had with Ingrid Bergman. He did his last film with her, Joan of Arc, which ended his career on a sour and disastrous note. They were quite a couple, behind the scenes.

She's one of my favorite actresses from that era.

In the Hitchcock book I'm reading he says that after playing Joan of Arc, no role was big enough for her as far as she was concerned.

Of all the 30's and 40's comedians, Bob Hope has dated the most, and translates the least. I can sit through his films and not crack a smile. That said, they've left out several films: "The Seven Little Foys", "The Paleface" and "Son of Paleface" which are better than what they included.

I bet the lot of you wouldn't know Kathryn Grayson if she bit you in the leg. I have to say I rather she bit me (in the leg! dammit and get your minds out of the gutter) than I had to listen to her sing again: she's got one of those trilling, semi-operatic voices a la Julie Andrews.

That said "Kiss Me, Kate" is lots of fun, and you can fast-forward through her sections of it, because she's the worst thing about it. But Keel, Miller, and Fosse are splendid.

At the start of his career, Matthau was frequently cast as a heavy (though they omit his best film as such, "Charade"), until he scored as "Whiplash Willie", the unscrupulous lawyer in "The Fortune Cookie" and got a best supporting actor Oscar. Billy Wilder then dominated his films, unfortunate because he was then past his best.

That said, "The Fortune Cookie" is funny (as long as it stays with Matthau and away from Lemmon), as is "The Odd Couple" and "The Bad News Bears"

In her day, Shearer was a Great Big Star. Whatever made her that is no longer (IMO) immediately obvious, and only a very few of her movies are watchable today. Part of the problem is that she was an MGM property, and it was a producer's studio and not a director's one. Another problem is that her leading men frequently have faded, too; Chester Morris and Robert Montgomery for two.

I haven't seen the Lubitsch film; she was also directed by Seastrom in her silent career (which was pretty extensive), so she had better luck then.

She's not bad as the older "Marie Antoinette" and in Cukor's "The Women" which unfortunately isn't on the list, and is the only movie of hers with much play today.

Never considered much of an actress (a canard), she was a favorite actress of John Ford, and made several other good films.

The three Fords are all good films: "How Green Was My Valley" and some others are missing.

"The Spanish Main" looks interesting and the Carol Reed film is good, too.
