Hud is his best. I would have been nice if they'd thrown in some newer ones, like his brilliant turn in Nobody's Fool in 1994 or 1995 or even Road to Perdition in which he was surprisingly great. Also, where the heck is The Verdict which should certainly be in any marathon attempting to plumb the kind of genius Newman was capable of.

His best performance, in "Tunes of Glory" is missing; of the rest, "Hobson's Choice" is very funny. "The Rocking Horse Winner" was produced by him, and so the groom he plays is the only sane non-exploitive adult--to the detriment of the film, IMO. Worth seeing for John Howard Davies.

Only vaguely remembered today as a star who was ruined by the coming of sound (see: Gene Kelly's character in "Singin' in the Rain"), John Gilbert is unfairly forgotten; he died young, before he had a chance to redeem his career.

In silents, he's good; I've seen "Bardeleys", "Flesh and the Devil" and "The Merry Widow".

Of the sound films, I've only seen a bit of "Queen Christina"...very, very slow, but there seemed to be nothing wrong with his voice. Perhaps the real problem is that the silent style was very different, and he didn't have a protector at the studio; Louis B. Mayer hated him.

I'm going to record "He Who

It didn't help that he was the highest paid either - apparently they maintained his salary but cut down the budget on pretty much everything else, resulting in him getting fairly poor vehicles to star in.

That is the kind of marathon TCM excels at. You just show up and end up watching the whole thing because it's just a window into another world. I'd love to see some of those.

The Flynn films are fun and directed by Curtiz; "The Heiress" and "The Snake Pit" are from her heavy drama era in the late 40's; and "The Light in the Piazza" is, given its time and place, one of the most weirdly subversive films ever.

My Favorite Year is great fun. Lawrence of Arabia deserves its press, which is saying something. Lord Jim is a weak adaptation and it has about the worst miscasting of James Mason you'll ever see, but O'Toole finds something in the character and gives a real performance.
