I saw Fort Apache a few years ago - it also stars Shirley Temple's then-husband John Agar as (surprise surprise) her character's love interest.

I found it to be fairly average - Wayne comes across as wooden, Temple and Agar (despite being married in real life) don't convince as a potential couple. I think only Fonda does well as the arrogant commander.

Obviously, the Dollars trilogy is essential viewing. Outlaw Josey Wales is brilliant too. Paint Your Wagon should be burned. I once watched the entire thing. It was punishing.

Each Tuesday this month is a tribute to Vivien Leigh.

    Tonight:

Cast: Vivien Leigh, Warren Beatty, Lotte Lenya, Coral Browne Dir: José Quintero BW-104 mins, TV-G [Letterbox] [Email Remind Me]

The problem here is Tennessee Williams, who wrote the source material.

    7:00pm [Romance] Anna Karenina (1948)

Cast: Vivien Leigh, Ralph Richardson, Kieron Moore, Hugh Dempster Dir: Julien Duvivier BW-113 mins, TV-14 [Email Remind Me]

The problem here is a brilliant Karenin (Richardson) and a completely inadequate Vronsky (Moore).

9:00pm [Drama] Caesar And Cleopatra (1945)
Julius Caesar gives the famed Egyptian queen lessons in government.
Cast: Vivien Leigh, Claude Rains, Stewart Granger, Flora Robson Dir: Gabriel Pascal C-128 mins, TV-G [Email Remind Me]

The direction is slow, but this is quite entertaining.

11:15pm [Drama] Ship of Fools (1965)
Passengers on a steam ship in the '30s struggle with their tangled relations and the rise of Nazism.
Cast: Vivien Leigh, Simone Signoret, Jose Ferrer, Lee Marvin Dir: Stanley Kramer BW-150 mins, TV-14 [Close Captioned] [Email Remind Me]

The problem here is Kramer. :p

2:00am [Documentary] Vivien Leigh: Scarlett and Beyond (1990)
Interviews and rare film clips trace the troubled career of one of the screen's most beautiful actresses. Hosted by Jessica Lange.
Cast: Jessica Lange, John Gielgud, Claire Bloom, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Dir: Gene Feldman C-46 mins, TV-G [Email Remind Me]

When Leigh had the right part, and a good director, she was great; unfortunately both were in short supply.

It was interesting to watch so many of her films in such a short period of time. She didn't have the best voice in the world, it's a little thin at times. But she had many gifts to make up for it.

I watched the documentary that Turner Broadcasting did on her that ran at 4am. She was "both blessed and cursed" by fate. Fabulous talents, looks and luck but cursed with mental illness and severe emotional problems. A lot of her friends were very concerned about her playing Blanche in Streetcar. A little too close to home for comfort.

Exactly, but in the right circumstances, she was brilliant. One critic I read dubbed her 'an unsympathetic actress' and at times he's quite right; so she had less opportunity to play the right roles given, as you note, the thin voice (a real problem on the stage) and an era in which woman aren't generally supposed to be bitches, if they play the lead. One role she might have been perfect for: Mary Tyrone in "A Long Days' Journey into Night." And I suspect she might have been really good in comedy.

It was pretty cool to see Leonard Maltin introducing a couple of movies when the "Critic's Choice" thing started. He's like everyone's favorite eccentric uncle - but a very knowledgeable one when it comes to classic movies.

If/when Osborne retires, it might be kind of cool if they offered him the job of main host, I'm sure he'd do a great job.

I admit Maltin would be a great choice, though he lacks that "avuncular uncle presence" that Osborne has. He's the perfect host for that channel, sort of the Walter Cronkite of TCM.

Still, they could do a lot worse than Osborne.
