It's a story that takes place during the timeline of the films.

To be EVEN clearer It's a star wars story but not a book, comic, or any other story in the form of printed matter.

Your so over thinking this. What do those pictures make up? What are they a part of.

Besides the holiday special was NOT a film, it never played in a theate. It MAY be seen as a made for TV film but it was not a film, it was a TV special. Hence the name The Holiday Special.

Well....

Film stock is 24(p) frames a second, NTSC video is 30(i) frames a second. Hence the need for 3:2 "pull down" when watching a film on a NTSC or ATSC TV. That was shot at 30 interlaced frames a second. Making it a TV based show.
This of course has changed in the last 5 years with digital video and HD content.
