That's why you gotta do teh play. People tend to not shout things in a theatre. It was nice for a change,

Although I was commenting (calling back?) as I was typing it

As long as we don't have anyone prancing in front of the screen, I'm game.

what about the 'this movie influenced star wars' marathon.

we start with the hidden fortress, throw in the day the earth stood still (for klaatu barada nikto), american grafitti, and a few others.

Great idea James... as I said before, I'm up for anything. Shouldn't we also show THX 1138 as well? ;)

How could American Grafitti inspire George Lucas? It's his own movie. [face_plain]

Speaking of Hidden Fortress, we can do an Akira Kurosawa marathon. Or Toshiro Mifune, either way. :p

Hidden Fortress, Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, Sanjuro, Yojimbo, Rashomon, and top it all off with Ran.

ooooh, yeah...that would be great. [face_love]

Brian, you are going to scare off the new members. ;)

Well we could do THX 1138 and American Grafitti together, maybe all of Lucas's short films from his USC days... I've seen them floating around now and then.

Is there anything constructive that we could be doing? I don't exactly mean constructing Michael's Millenium Falcon (which isn't a bad idea), but something where we have something to show for our time?

Don't get me wrong, movies are cool in their own right, but there's always charity-ish type stuff etc.(the scheduled-for-ComiCon 501st children's hospital visit was cancelled, maybe we could fix that?)

I feel a bit odd exploiting Michael's resources like this. To just sit around and make a mess.

It would be different if we held a symposium on the movies we watched. Like, for instance, we watch a movie, then afterwards try to get a feeling of what everyone took away from it. The analyzation could prove to be funner than the movie itself, and may even serve to make some of us see or think from a different angle. Learning and building your brain isn't supposed to hurt, folks. But, sitting on your butt for fourteen hours might, and doesn't help anything, either.

    Armand,

I am working on some Charity events. We will be doing an event at the Polinsky center soon, and others are in the works. I'll post that in a seperate thread when I get more information. But this is a movie thread. ;)

"How could American Grafitti inspire George Lucas? It's his own movie. "

it's success inspired George to keep making movies, and with the money he made on it, he was able to. The themes in it didn't inspire George, but it's place in history allowed for george to tell this other story idea he had. (it may have also inspired Fox to distribute his new film, after it was turned down by other studios)

I've heard so much about your big screen Brian, you host a smaller one.

For the record.... Kurosawa does in fact rule.

    Heh heh...

I have all those I listed on Criterion DVD except for Yojimbo, Sanjuro, and Seven Samurai. The rest my roommate has. So no worries. ;)

How about a comparison of original vs "the inspiration":

    Hidden Fortress - Star Wars
Seven Samuri - The Magnificent Seven
    Ran - Ran

Did I miss anything? (Probably as I've never seen any of the Kurosawa films.)

Hiya Pete! Well, we have our own mini-theatre thanks to one of our sponsors, and Michael has just about every movie on DVD or Laserdisc. We just started playing the Indy Trilogy at 11am, and I think it was 2am by the time I got home. We have a potluck, and usually there is enough food for both lunch and dinner for everyone.

Any chance we will get to see you on the West coast anytime soon? I haven't seen you since Celebration.
