For the first time in a few years I am getting a band together to play original heavy metal songs. The name of the band is going to be Blaze Atoms (which I got by copying the Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers formula and switching the spelling of Adams to Atoms) and the first song we are working on is a ten-minute epic I've been working on for over a year called "Ulic Qel-Droma and the Beast Wars of Onderon" based on the Star Wars comic books of the same name. The music is best described as progressive thrash metal, being mostly a mix of thrash metal like Slayer or early Metallica and progressive rock like early Rush or King Crimson.

The lyrics are supposed to be as faithful to the story as possible, but in parts it was necessary to over-simplify a tiny bit to keep the plot moving as quickly as possible. I'm not really looking for generalized feedback although that's fine too if someone wants to offer it, what I really would like feedback on is whether I set up the civil war on the planet well enough and then explain all the plot developments in the adventure well enough that someone who didn't know the comic could follow the story.

The notes in the [brackets] indicate changes in the music to help you imagine how the lyrics will go in-context a little bit better. Master Arca's motif is really short, hence the shortness and kind of randomness of those sections.

I probably should have mentioned that in the spirit of John William's approach to the original SW film, the entire song is structured around motifs I made for the different main characters

So without further ado, here are the lyrics:

Ulic Qel-Droma and the Beast Wars of Onderon

Onderon is the planet, it’s orbited by four moons
The closest one has its own atmosphere that in ancient times touched its host

Then, great beasts from the moon soared through the sky and migrated to the planet below
Its people, at the dawn of becoming civilized, were ripped to shreds and consumed

The people of Onderon fought back and built a great walled city
With millions to defend from the savage outlands they sentenced their law-breakers to face

But some beasts were subdued by outlaws who survived and trained as mounts for an army
Wild kingdoms rose of beast-riding warlords that still battle the city today

    [new motif] Master Arca teaches

[new motif] Ulic Qel-Droma, his brother Cay, and Tot Doneeta the Twi’lek
Three apprentices on their first mission alone, sent by Master Arca to bring peace to Onderon
Flying the Nebulon Ranger they near the city walls when a swarm of beast-riders unleashes an assault
The great wall’s defenses hold back the beasts so the guardians of peace can meet the city’s queen

[new motif] Queen Amanoa sits high on her throne
Asks the young Jedi why they’ve come alone
Where’s the great Master she wanted to see
To protect her daughter and her city?

[back to Ulic motif] Glass shatters as beast-riders crash through the throne room’s windows overhead
Queen Amanoa and her daughter Princess Galia are escorted by the city guard to safety as
Ulic Qel-Droma ignites his blade of light, the ancient weapon of the Jedi Knights

A beast-rider swoops down to take his life but Ulic keeps his mind calm and lets the Force be his guide
His lightsaber slices off the flying beast’s head; green gore gushes from its neck as it tumbles to its death
Tot Doneeta the Twi’lek and Ulic’s brother Cay swing lightsabers at more beast-riders as they invade

    [guitar solo]

Three Jedi apprentices under attack; beast-riders coming in too fast for them all to be held back
Beast warrior commandos crush the palace guard and take Princess Galia up into their arms
With her in their grip they make their escape; the Jedi vow to the queen that the princess will be saved

[new motif] The Nebulon Ranger takes flight once again
To save the princess who the Jedi swore to defend
Chasing the beast-riders through the savage outlands
It’s blasted from the sky by a warlord’s cannons

Their deflector shields fry and they crash

Wild beasts approach the wreckage from all sides
Tot Doneeta uses the Force to control their minds
The Jedi ride on their backs to the great fortress
Where a beast-riding warlord holds the captive princess

They arrive on the scene in a flash

At the fortress the three young Jedi come upon
The wedding of the princess and a warlord’s son
Ulic grabs her but she screams and fights with him
Leaving the queen for this marriage was her own plan
Now Ulic finally sees a chance to bring peace to this planet
One leader from each side to keep them all united

But only if Queen Amanoa accepts

[back to Queen Amanoa motif, but evil variation] The Jedi take them back to the city
Princess Galia begs the queen for peace
Queen Amanoa hates her ancient foe
So much it disturbs balance in the Force

    [John Williams Imperial/dark side motif]

[back to evil queen motif variation] She raises her arms, darkness reaches out
Filling minds with fear, confusion and doubt
    Evil waves attack, surging everywhere
Dark side of the Force power overwhelms

[back to Ulic motif] Ulic Qel-Droma and Cay and Tot Doneeta retreat with the city’s princess and warlord’s son
Now they see the city walls being besieged by all the world’s beast-riding warlords’ united armies
Onderon has never seen a battle this great pounding on its surface till it starts to tremble and quake

Three Jedi apprentices fight just to survive; untold millions of city guard and beast-riders kill and die
The dark side sorcery of the city’s queen strengthens the city guard and makes the beast-riders weak
At last a great Jedi Master nears and her power fades, causing the city to fall to a new beast-rider reign

[back to Master Arca motif] Master Arca arrives
    Sides of the Force collide

    [John Williams Jedi/the Force motif]

[back to Master Arca motif] Master Arca has won (or “Only the Jedi stands”)
The dark side now is gone (or “The dark side now is dead”)

All those who heed the call of heavy music, I beg thee to spare a few minutes of thy time in another musical dimension.

This is either my favorite composition of mine ever or tied for it with one other song. I would describe it as an epic proto progressive dixieland thrash metal symphony. Which, while awesomely over-the-top, I am also dead serious about! This is the best blend of all these influences I have done yet. The one warning I have to send out to those who aren't into any kind of heavy music is that all the vocals on this particular song are a very harsh style often associated with black metal or death metal (my influence for it comes from thrash bands Kreator and Hypnosia). As my folks would say, it just sounds like "devil music" to them.

I composed this song and recorded all the instruments on this recording in 2009/2010, and I really owe the drummer from my last band (who I am starting a new one with now) for giving me the confidence in this recording I just had sitting around that I'd gotten really frustrated with and quit on. The only thing on this that was recorded more recently are the vocals which I did this week. So please give it a listen and let me know what you think, I would greatly appreciate it!

This is VERY different from how I blend these influences in "Ulic Qel-Droma and the Beast Wars of Onderon" however, which has much more straightforward hooks (so the motifs can easily be identified) and a LOT less dissonance and sections that are intended to catch you off-guard - almost none, in fact. Also, almost all of the singing in that will be clean or "normal" singing. So the style is as different as could possibly be considering I still think of it as a blend of all the same influences as described above. Just want to be clear about that even though I am extremely proud of "Karmanal of Zert" as well.

For some reason one person who listened to this could only hear the drums before plugging in external speakers but so far only the one person has had that problem, so please let me know if anything similar happens to anyone here.
