Up there Cazaly - The Australian Rules Football Discussion Jamboree

Barely known outside Australia, it is arguably the most popular spectator sport in its own country, especially for its great GOALS and MARKS.

The major competition is the AFL, which incorporates teams from every mainland Australian State, of which ten teams are based in Victoria, 2 in both South Australia and Western Australia and one each from Queensland and New South Wales. In September of this year, the West Coast Eagles revenged their defeat in the Grand Final of 2005 to take out the Premiership.

Australian Rules is a fast paced, action packed game. Players move the ball by Running with it, Kicking or Handpassing (Throwing is not allowed). Players aim is to Kick the ball thorugh the 'Big Sticks', the middle ones, which scores Six points. If the ball goes through between one of the big sticks and a smaller stick it is only worth one point.

Games are played on an Oval Field, over four quarters of 20 minutes each, plus 'time on' (like injury or stoppage time).

Because the last season just finished and doesn't begin again until March/April, this thread can be used as a speculation one for next season, as well as a Q&A thread for those infortunates who know nothing about the game.

I don't follow AFL, Kypt, but did I hear it right that channel 7 actually has the rights to some of the major games here?

 

Yeah, the rights changed hands - it used to be 9 and 10, now it's 7 and 10, although there's more games on Foxtel this time around

Couple of highlight videos for those unfamiliar with the sport.

 

Bah, we have 4 ruckmen ATM, Hudson, Maric (who is a backup and still inexperienced) and 2 rookies. Maric and one of the rookies just went down with multiple-month injuries...we are in trouble already.

 

Yeah, well we put our best team (minus McPhee) on the park and lost to the last place team from last year.

Don't lose heart Kyptastic! The Bombers made a spirited comeback and if Carlton didn't get 10 cheap free kicks we would have won. I think the AFL is trying to give Carlton some extra money!

Here's hoping Sheedy still has some tricks left. Otherwise, this could be his last season.

Our Forward line looks excellent, our backline, with Mal Michael giving Fletcher and McPhee more freedom, looks better, and our midfield has developed some good players over the last couple of years (Stanton, Watson, Monfries) to go with the old hands.

 

First round of the regular season started last night - St Kilda upset (IMO) Melbourne.

Can't wait until Sunday for Essendon's first match, especially since we're at full strength for the first time in a couple of years, and Adelaide have a few injury concerns (although it is being played in Adelaide, where we lost by a substantial margin last year )

I think Port are going to towel us in a couple of weeks.

 

That grand final rematch was oh so close.

 

Another good win to the boys, ten points over Fremantle.

I know it's early, but I'm starting to get a little excited for this year. Hopefully we can continue our good form against Carlton next week.

 

Is it too early to say Fremantle were overrated? They've shown nothing so far.

And the Showdown next week should be a cracker. I have renewed hope.
