Saw it last night. Wow! What a change of pace for Pixar. The opening 15 minutes are so bitter sweet. YOu have to see it in 3D. It's all about the depth of field and not about the screen popping gags. Absolute Smashing!

I really want to see this! Pixar has never let me down and- SQUIRREL! and I'd be sweet to see it in 3D...

 

We saw it on the regular screen today and it was still stunning. Yes, the opening was bittersweet but it set up the story beautifully. LOTS of heart! Pixar has not let us down! (pun intended)

 

I definitely want to see this too. Maybe after the picnic. The kid in it looks exactly like my nephew!

 

Up was awesome! I totally see what you meant Lou, Pixar is not afraid to get into difficult dramatic territory to build it's story and character development. Up is on of Pixar's best! Oh and there is an AWESOME nod to a legendary fighter squadron that we all know and love, HELL YEAH! Pixar rules! Oh and the short is awesome too!

 

It was a good movie, but Ellie looked too much like Mrs Incredible, that's my only grievance, really good movie.

 

Oh yeah... now that you mention it you're right. Actually all the character design was "Incredible-esque".

 

I saw it the other day and liked it a lot. Like other stuff they've made, creativity stands out compared to a lot of other current movies. Liked the characters, and very colorful. Excellent!

 

I'm surprised no one started a thread earlier so we could see this as a group?

Oh well, maybe for Transformers then.

 

Sorry Matty, we went to see it cos someone brought it up in idle conversation and we were meeting up that night anyway. So we went without alerting the rest of the SFFF think tank. We went to Tanforan for it and heads up, that they'll charge a $3 surcharge for the 3D-ness. =P

 

Right now there is a big "Up" blimp flying over Alameda!

 

Would be cool if the cabin was in the shape of a house.

 

Is Red Squadron there giving it a fighter escort?

 

I finally got to see this last night, and I must say I really liked it. The voice talents and animation were great, but I really liked the quieter moments with no dialogue, but just music and expressions.

I'm now going to start calling my 5 year-old nephew "Russell", based on his resemblance to the character. I liked the nice "Star Wars" nod at the end too. When I go to CV, I'll start counting red and blue lightsabers.

When we were at Star Wars Weekends, we saw lots of squirrels around the various parks, and couldn't help pointing them out - Doug style.

Now I feel like going to Fenton's for some ice cream.

 

SQUIRREL! POINT *POINTS THE WRONG WAY...* Dude Fenton's is only 1.5 miles away from my place in Piedmont, come by anytime man. Did you also like the nod to Red Squadron? hehehe...

There is a South bay company that does blimp tours, could be the equivalent of bus ads.

 

I've seen the zeppelin flying around. Don't they charge like $500 for an hour tour?

 

At Star Wars Weekends, Kathy noticed how the Magic Kingdom no longer had those gondolas that take you above and across the park.

It would be nice to have a big one in the shape of a house instead, or have a ride similar to the one at California Adventure or at Epcot, where you soar to South America to Paradise Falls!

Terminally ill California girl gets dying wish to see Up

Every now and then, we here find a story that underscores why we do what we do here, and this is one. It's the story of a terminally ill 10-year-old California girl whose last wish was to screen the Disney/Pixar movie Up and the noble people at Pixar who granted it just in time.

The story's been the buzz of the Internet since it broke on the Associated Press (via The Orange County Register) last week. We don't need to go into the details?mainly because they tear our hearts out?but here's the gist:

Colby Curtin desperately wanted to see Up, but the cancer-stricken girl was too sick to go to a theater. Thanks to a family friend who got in touch with the movie studio Pixar, an employee of the Emeryville, Calif.,-based company arrived at Colby's home with a DVD copy of the movie. Because she was too ill to keep her eyes open, Colby's mom described the movie to her as it played. Asked afterward if she enjoyed the movie, the girl nodded. She died later that night.

Here's what's sad and awful and wonderful about this story, aside from the obvious. It shows there are still people?even in Hollywood?who care more about a child's dying wish than they do about money or copyrights or legal niceties. It shows that a film story still has the power to give hope and comfort and joy and solace to people in the most extreme circumstances.

And it shows that Up really is something special: The message of the movie, after all, is that even in the depths of loss and grief, love can reach across the vastness of time and space to touch us, to allow us to go on. Love is the true adventure.

Bill Hunt over at Digital Bits is reporting several sources say November 10th will see a Blu-ray and DVD release of Up.

 

For the DVD/Blu-Ray release of the film, there will be a party at Fenton's at 5 pm on Tuesday, Nov. 10!

And on Monday, Pixar Animation Studios' Brad Bird, the director of Ratatouille and The Incredibles, will chat with Chronicle columnist Jon Carroll at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. The conversation will benefit the academic and financial assistance programs at Park Day School in Oakland. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased online at www.parkdayschool.org or call (510) 653-0317.
