Cheryl from the Mayor's Office of Special Events called and left a message this afternoon letting me know that the City decided to reschedule the costume parade after all.
She left a really nice message and sounded very saddened by last week's tradgedy, but asked specifically whether we would be able to march in a rescheduled parade this Saturday, 10/25 at NOON.
(Same set up as this past weekend)

PLEASE let me know if any of you will be able to do this.

I am going to give her a call tomorrow and let her know that a portion of the Midwest Garrison will be at the Road America Walk/run for Cancer on Oct 25th, but perhaps there are some members who will not be able to go up to Wisconsin that would be interested in marching downtown-again.
IN hind-sight, I see that it was a good plan not to put the date on the event badges I made for everyone.
I had been planning on going to Wisconsin on Saturday.
If anyone at all would like to participate in the rescheduled costume parade, please let me know a.s.a.p. so I can pass on the word to the Mayor's office.

Oh crud... I have to contact other members of my party, but there's a good chance we'll be available.

    Excellent!

I will tell the Mayor's office tomorrow! :)

I was practically crying after I heard her message on my answering machine. I am glad that they decided to reschedule, but now I am torn between going to Wisconsin for the Cancer Walk and to the costume parade.

I'll come out to watch, although I do have out book club to moderate at 1 p.m. It's at the Borders at State and Randolph, so it's not that far. However, I don't know how many of our costumed members were planning on attending book club that afternoon. If enough costumed people have to drop out of book club, I can look into having it later in the afternoon.

Yeah. I understand----a bunch of us are going to a Walk/Run event for Cancer up in in Wisconsin on Saturday. (Ya der hey)
I am planning on going up there. I will talk to the Mayor's office today and fill them in. I am sure they will understand as well, but for anyone that did not have previous plans for Saturday, please consider this an option.

I'll see what I can do. We have a training session at the Field for the renovated Life Over Time/DNA exhibit that morning.

Yes, I haven't forgotten my mission. But the book club may start later to give us time for the parade. If so, I'll be at both.

    EXcellent.

I told the lady at the Mayor's Office to expect hopefully about a dozen folks this SAturday. Anyone who can make it out there in costume will certainly be welcomed.........and Emma's Aayla Secura rocked! I can't believe she is 13!?! She's just 2 years older than Quincy!

10/23 UPDATE FOR PARADE this SATURDAY 10/25:

I got this today via fax: I just typed it all over.

    Quote:
    -----------------------

    October 22, 2003

    To All Participants:

On behalf of Richard M. Daley and the Mayor's Office of Special Events, we
are excited that your organization will be participating in the 7th Annual
State Street Halloween Happening, presented by the City of Chicago. The
event will take place on Saturday, October 25, 2003 at noon. The day's
activities, lasting until approximately 3:00pm promise fun and mischief for
all and we encourage your group's participants to dress in costume and carry
a banner with your group or school name.

Please read the following instructions carefully to help your organization
    plan for this fun-filled day:

Your group should travel together in the same vehicle. Parking for vehicles
will only be on the north curb lane of Wacker Drive, from State west to
Franklin. We ask that you arrive no later than 11:00am There is no parking
provided for private cars not carrying marchers.

We will provide you with a parking permit when you arrive. You must display
it in the windshield of your vehicle. The number on your pass is your group
number. The pass must remain on your windshield while you are parked.
Buses and vehicles will start parking at State Street and work their way
west to Franklin, so your driver should pull in front of the last vehicle
they see traveling westbound on Wacker Drive. Do Not block any driveways on
the street. All vehicles must remain on Wacker during the event. This
arrangement will also prevent your children from getting lost after the
event concludes. Please advise all children in your group of the number we
have assigned. We strongly encourage giving each child a bright sticker to
wear on their clothing identifying the vehicle number. Please note that
this number does not denote the parade line-up, but a group number to assist
in identifying all of your participants. Also, there will be a lost
children's tent located on the plaza near Dearborn Street.

When your group arrives, a staff member from the Mayor's Office of Special
Events will provide the parking pass for your vehicle and will escort your
group to the staging area. Please do not leave your vehicle until you are
    escorted to the staging area.
Parade line up begins at 11:30am at State and Lake streets.
The procession begins at noon on State and Randolph - heads south on State
to Monroe, then heads west on Monroe to Dearborn and north on Dearborn to
Washington, finishing at Pumpkin Plaza, site of the Haunted Village, a
storybook replica of a haunted house! Judges along the parade route will
choose the costume winners from the crowd as finalists in the costume
contest. They will be instructed to go to the stage once they arrive at
Pumpkin Plaza at the completion of the parade. A map of the route follows.

Once everyone reaches the Plaza, there will also be hayrides around Pumpkin
Plaza, magicians, and shows by the Midnight Circus, a very talented theater
    group and many treats.

All buses and vehicles must leave the parking area on Wacker by 3:00pm

Thank you once again for your participation. Please contact Tom Gray at
    (312) 744-6517 if you have any questions.

    Sincerely,

    Erin Bauer
    Chicagoween Manager
    ---------------------------------

I will be going up to WI early SAturday morning, however, Vince has decided to stay here and work. I live on the North side ~35 minute train ride to downtown.
    If anyone wants to
get dressed at our house on Saturday morning and then take the train
downtown for the parade, please contact me.

Can some one write a brief synopsis of what happened? Was it fun? Who all showed up and in what costumes? What kind of reactions did you get? Did the kids know who you were?

    ....and.....

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH for coming out to this!

I am seriously looking into having myself cloned! We did have a GREAT time at the cancer walk and we did actually walk almost half of the course in armor.

    The Sleeping Beauty Crew had a great time! Despite some technical/ structural issues with the dragon that prevented some of us from participating in the actual parade, we headed to Daley Plaza where we hung out at various places and had lots of fun with the kiddies. My little sis was dressed as Aurora and was beautiful! The kids loved her and kept running up to her for hugs!! 8-}

Even funnier was tiny little kids standing in front of the 9 foot dragon and looking up.. up? up.. to the head. And of course all the parents that kept throwing kids in front of us for pictures. Even after the dragon had to make an early exit, Steve came back with just the head and held it up behind us during some pictures.

I saw quite a few MWG/RL members there, including Emily in her rebel pilot gear, another pilot, at least one trooper, Alaya Secura, Obi Wan, Destiny Frost, Amber Eyes, and a few others.

Next up for us: Halsted Street Parade

The parade itself was kind of disorganized. It was basically, stand in the street, keep your group together, now start walking.
We had one Rebel pilot (Emily), one TIE pilot, one short trooper (TKSTACKO), 4 Jedi (the forth was Mrs Stacko), Aalaya Sekura, and the clone emperor. Walking with us was one fairy & Aurora. We threw candy along the route, handed the rest out at the Plaza, posed for pictures all over & boogied in front of the Picasso. Oh yeah, we went to Fields for lunch too.

Man...it is just too bad that they had to reschedule from last week....I am sure attendance as a whole (both spectators and marchers) was way down....the weather kinda sucked this past Saturday and was just so beautiful the week before.....a shame indeed.....

    but like the Cubs....
    there is always next year
    ;)

    Photos? Photos?

btw....were there any photos taken last week at the Symphony?
