It's a surprise. But Its not an absolute shock. #14 over #1 isn't ridiculously unheard of.

Can someone explain the two ESPN headlines about Spain's unbeaten streak to me? First there was the "hasn't lost since 2006 (I think), 35 straight wins, 1 shy of world record" and then immediately followed by "this snaps Spain's world record 15-game winning streak" wait, what?

You can draw in football. It's 35 without defeat (one shy of the record for games without defeat). 15 straight wins (the record for straight wins).

Oh, that's right. I'm used to sports that aren't allowed to end in a tie

Exactly, 35 game unbeaten streak, and now nobody cares because they lost to the USA.

Is it just this one or does a giant swarm of bees hover over every soccer match?

So, perhaps this is a bit of what it would have been like if the United States had slipped on a banana peel against Finland after beating Russia in 1980.

QFT, that was the worst performance I've ever seen in any football game ever.

The US had a good first half... but fell flat in the second.

I thought it was an entertaining game. Good 1st half by the US with a world class score against Brazil. Brazil comes back in the second half and takes it to the US. Fun, fun, fun...

I'm starting to think that following USA Soccer is a bit like following Cleveland sports teams. Sometimes, they're good enough or win enough to get your hopes up, but at the end of the day, they don't have the talent to win it all on a fluke or to compete year-in and year-out.

I will admit the performance at the Confed Cup still has my interest in soccer at an all-time high, thanks in no small part to ESPN's airing of UEFA Cup last year, and actually getting to watch the best in the world play live.

Ugly win last night. Needed those 3 points bad. It was a heck of a goal though.
