I'm going to be in the Irvine area just below LA, any recommendations from our local JCers?

Irvine isn't "just below LA", it's a good hour+ south of LA. ;)

And for 3 weeks? I hope you have a car, since there's not much to do in Irvine.

No, but Newport is right next door, and there's plenty to do there. It's also not very far from Laguna, which has plenty of art galleries and such.

But yes, all of that still requires a car.

    Drive-thru art galleries, eh?

It doesn't "require" a car. A (OCTA) bus would take longer, especially if you have to switch routes on the way, but it's doable.

Personally I prefer the hovercraft-through art galleries.

Jive-thru art galleries are good, too.

No problem, I will have a car for the duration of my stay. I'm actually looking forward to being able to drive for more than 40 miles. I haven't done that in about a year now.

The Art Gallery sounds like a great time.

Driving 40 miles is not a lot of fun in L.A.

Visit the Norton-Simon museum in Pasadena if you like art. Santa Monica Pier is cool (it's the "end" of the old Route 66). Catch a performance by the band "Looner." The dude is my old roommate. Drive to Oxnard and get a tattoo from Carson Hill. Go to Disneyland. Eat In-N-Out burgers everyday.

It can't be any worse than trying to drive twenty miles to honolulu on H-1 at 6am every morning. :p

Well, I guess it could. But I don't want to think about it.

Disneyland (3 full days should be enough to do both parks), Lego Land (San Diego), Universal Studios, Knots Berry Farm, Six Flags, and every other theme park you can get to.

Honestly? Avoid the theme parks. There's so much more to do in the LA area. Agree with Mort on the Norton Simon. There's also the Getty, LACMA, and MOCA if you want to check out art while your here. And in March your just about into the ideal time to go hiking in the LA Basin, especially up in the Angeles crest.

I'd rather be stuck in traffic in Hawaii than driving ANYWHERE in Wisconsin.

Don't listen completely to DLB. :p Many of the theme parks are nice & exciting to visit.

    Los Angeles Lakers: Drama, guaranteed.

12 hours is more than enough, if you're an adult with no kids tagging along. Park hopper passes are also over $100. I'd personally much rather go to the museums-- not only are they a lot cheaper, they're more interesting (unless you're the type of person who like riding kiddie trains) and don't reek of consumerism and money-grubbing.

Disney not three days, imo, unless you're big on Disney. The pier is overrated, although I endorse the Hollywood theaters. They're good to check stuff out at.

Well, just in the direct LA area, you can head up into the hills above Hollywood. Bunch of trails that you can explore on foot down below the Hollywood sign. Not full day stuff, but pretty popular.
