y did vadar wait until ESB to tell luke he was dad why didnt he just go to tatuine and tell him in person wasnt the lars house the same?

 

I think he was lazy. Or maybe he didn't like Tatooine. I mean, he was a slave there, then his mom died there, then he went pyscho there. Plus, we don't know the Luke situation from Episode III yet.

 

Yeah, he was probably just too lazy. Same reason he didn't kill the Emporer before RotJ... He could've done it, just woulda taken too much effort.

 

He didn't know Luke was alive.

 

He had no clue where his son was. He didn't find out who Luke was until after the Battle of Yavin.

Vader almost certainly didn't know Luke was alive until after the Battle of Yavin.

 

He didn't know about Luke until after ANH. He didn't find out about Leia, Luke's twin, until he scaned Luke's thoughts in ROTJ.

 

Wasn't he the guy from M.A.S.H.?

 

He MAY have known about him. Even if he did, I doubt he knew he was still alive.

 

He probably didn't want to face his memories of Tatooine. Vader's pretty fanatical about the power of the Dark Side and all around the time of ANH - reliving his good memories on Tatooine would hinder his progress towards being "the most powerful Jedi ever".

 

I think he would have more bad memories of Tatooine than good. He doesn't seem very happy to see Watto or any other "old friends" there in AotC, and the death of Shmi must have sealed it for him. It might not be coincidence that Luke was hidden there - maybe the Jedi assumed there was no chance Vader would set foot on that planet again.

I bet Luke never sent Vader a father's day card in the time between TESB and ROTJ either.
