Who was truly the most powerful, Darth Vader or Emperor Palpatine?

In the end, I think it was Vader. He had the power to kill Palpatine, and he had the power to overcome the light side and turn back to the good side.

    Vader

He is the chosen one...I have foreseen it!

Also, who else could get away with wearing that cape for so long as fashionably as he did? Palpatine would get beaten up by school kids with his fashion sense, but Vader's sense of style will live forever...

That AND he's just a plain old stud!

    Darth Vader

He killed more people and he's more cool than the Emperor. And he is also the chosen one.

The Emperor(Darth Sidious) squemed a master plan to overcome the galaxy and succeded.
He kept the whole Jedi Order clouded while he was doing it.
He was powerfull enough to turn the "chosen one" to the darkside.

    He is the must powerfull.

And he was defeted by Vader only because of Luke's persistence towards his father.

The fact is that Anakin/Vader was always a lackey. Yes you heard me he was a BIG lackey. He was first Watto's slave so he took orders. Then he was Qui Gon's unoficial aprentice, so he took orders. Then he became Obi Wan's aprentice and so he took orders. After that he became Padme's protector and so he took orders and got belittled by her, repeatedly in AOTC. Then he joins the darkside and becomes the Emperor's Main bootlicker and also Grand Moff Tarkins lackey too. So really so much power to always be subdued by someone. He probably wouldnt of have turned against The Emperor, he was too used to taking orders, sure he schemed and everything, but when it comes down to facing such a challenge, he would have failed. Anakin Skywalker had way too much fear inside of him. So I think even if Luke accepted he would have to still be killed by Luke or the emperor. Because in ROTJ the only way Luke could join the emperor was by killing his father. So if Luke fell to the darkside then most probably his father would have been sliced into itty-bitty pieces.

    LONG LIVE THE EMPEROR!

    Hey Lonewolf89! I know you! :)

Vader all the way! He was just cool. (Besides being the Chosen One). Palpy was just old and ugly... I agree about Anakin/Vader being a "lackey" though. He didn't like politics and didn't want to get involved (his choice IMO), he just liked to kick butt!

And he did that WITHOUT Vader's help.

Vader is way more powerful. He is the strongest in the force (ie. the prophesy), so the Emperor can't compare that way.

Palpatine is much craftier. He overthrew the Republic by his scheming and dirty politics. He is also definitely more evil.

If Vader was the "most powerful Jedi ever" then logically he'd be the Most powerful Sith too.

Let's clear some things up. Anakin/Vader indeed was "the chosen one"
but this was because he had the most POTENTIAL to be the greatest
Jedi ever. But, having potential to be something does not mean that
you will definetely be! Vader is by far my favorite Star Wars character,
and he is really cool as many have already said, but he can in no way
be compared to Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidius who was BY FAR the most
powerfull being that ever existed. Just look at what he accomplished
with destroying a Galactic Republic that existed for thousands of years
under the Jedi's nose. Not to mention that he was practicaly immortal.
Even Darth Tyranous was more powerful than Vader, he was the only
person other than the Emperor to possess the power of "force lighting",
as he showed us in AOTC. Sure, Vader threw the Emperor down the
reactor shaft but this thing alone can't erase their history.

I think that Vader was more powerful and talented in the Force, but I think that Palpatine put his Force abilities to better use through his manipulative brilliance. He used the Force to deceive an entire government and become its absolute ruler for a time. Therefore, I think that while Vader had more raw Force abilites, Palpatine honed his skills to a point where he could use the Force in a more effective manner than his servant.

    Sidious = The Brains
    Vadar = The Power
I suppose there are different ways to be powerful. In the end, Anakin did over take The Emperor, and that shows an emotional power. Power to turn back from the Dark Side. He was also apparently more gifted with a lightsaber, but I like what dArTh_wenley said, we haven't seen Sidious fight yet. Wouldn't that be cool for Ep.III?

I agree with YodaJediMaster12. Anakin was the most talented of all,
but talent alone can't make you the best there is.
The Emperor had "unlocked" forces that none else ever did; in terms
of power he was definitely the greatest "user" of the Force...

Vader spends his entire life kowtowing to someone else, but by no means does that make him powerless. We know he has more Force potential than anyone else to live, and certainly more than Palpy. Palpy seems to keep Vader under his thumb by psychological games and manipulation, which is not a Force ability. (I'm guessing we'll find out more about just what Palpy did to Vader in E3.) But the crux of the matter is, Palpatine somehow manipulated the Chosen One while he was still young and naive so he would have to serve him for life.

According to the RotJ novel, Vader had decided he would tolerate Palpy's treatment only as long as he had something to learn from the old guy - as soon as he became strong enough and had no more need for Palpy, he was going to toss him. The implication is that Vader was attaining power comparable to what Palpy had at half Palpy's age. The moment in which Vader shafted Palpy marked the moment in which he surpassed his master. Can you imagine how powerful Vader would have been if he had lived to Palpy's age?

That's tough, Anakin is the chosen one but we're talkin about the ruler of the Empire here. I'd have to say Palpatine.

Yes Lord_Makro, I wrote that Sidious = Brains
I meant that he was brillant. He had the power to blind all the Jedi and Senate for years, he plotted the entire destruction of the Republic, turned Anakin to the Dark Side...he had brains, and because of that he was very powerful. He just used his skills with the Force in a different way then Vadar did.
