They'll have to make TIEs intimidating again. Will they have them roar, swoop in, and destroy the heroes one by one or will they just be annoying, buzzing clutter?

TIE fighters are obviously prepared to being scrapped, so friendy droids can be build from them... Well, considering Disney wants to concentrate on ST-related products, we have a reason for optimism.

I think it would be better off if they had the TIE fighters back or some form of an upgrade on them in order to make that connection with original trilogy fans. The TIE AND X-WING fighters are iconic and they need to embrace that.

in the table top RPG, there were stats for hybrid junker ships that had the x-wing body and tie wingy things. I always liked them

Wookieepedia says that normal TIEs, TIE Bombers, and TIE Interceptors appear in ROTJ.

Yes, that is correct (a TIE Bomber is seen suspended from the ceiling in the hangar in which Vader lands at the beginning of the movie).

Looks like something out of Force Unleashed, by the way he is holding the light saber upside down, plus clone troopers plus tie fighters?

A big question is, who'll be using them if they're included?

Whilst the prototypical characteristics of TIE starfighters were pre-Imperial, it'd be associated with said government by the galaxy at large, and any government post-Empire would probably want to remove themselves from any association of Imperial utilized gear, so no TIE "panels" and dagger-shaped capital ships with the new government's forces. Well, that's what I'd think people would do; even if the government is strapped for cash, they can scrap the former Imperial vessels and make new ones from the material (that'd boost the economy, actually).

The NR had a bunch of ISD's. They're a very solid design with heavy armor and a lot of firepower. You don't just throw something like that away.

Their greatest ever flagship was the Lusankya, an Executor class dreadnought (Identical to Vader's flagship in ESB and RoTJ). It was instrumental in defeating the Vong.

I have a feeling that the series isn't set after ROTJ but before ANH...

The Volkswagen Beetle was created at the bequest of Adolph Hitler and he even had design input; yet it was successful and beloved long after the Nazis fell.

Well... to be fair... the VW Beetle wasn't used to terrorize or subjugate their populace.

Or terrorize much of anything, actually...

Do not underestimate the power of the beetle. It has spelled doom for many a pedestrian.

    On topic:
Star destroyers will definitely be back. They look much more iconic than the weird mon calas whatevers.

The old republic also used star destroyers called "Venators". Besides the new star destroyers would be a bit different in design to show the passage of time.

Correct. "Tanks" have been used to cause specific groups of people some seriously devastating social anxieties by specific regimes, but the general model of "tanks" is still a necessity for militaries, so the basic model is in circulation without people associating them with, say, Panzers.

Precisely. The context of that post was why it wouldn't necessarily have to be a terrifying sight to see the New Republic using basic models of ships which were used by the Empire... but, also by the Republic before it.

Technology is neutral. It isn't "good" or "evil" because of who used it. It doesn't take on the attributes of its users.

On a somewhat related note, one of the things I thought was dumb writing, was the NR executing Bevel Lemelisk. That would be like the USA executing Wernher von Braun. And then where would we be now... such people are too useful. One must be pragmatic in deciding what to do with them.

The dagger-shaped capital ship design has apparently been around for ever, and Star Destroyers in particular don't have to be associated with the Empire. After 35+ years, they might easily be obsolete or in use by some fringe groups or as support vessels to the more advanced models.

EDIT - Also, on the mentioning of Panzers, the Panzer IVs were in active service up until late 1960s in a few countries, if I recall correctly. Just a fun fact.
