She doesn't have to die, at least not in TLJ. The movie's already going to have family drama so why add a throwaway one? Rose feeling inferior to Paige could be achieved without Paige dying and be even more effective when they reunite and Rose is a big hero.

 

Especially if Paige doesn't feel like she's superior to her sister herself. It's just Rose's insecurities acting up.

 

And many times gunners are also pilots!!

 

I'm sure that the New Republic Flight Academy would not waste resources training pilots to sit in a bubble firing a gun.

 

Yeah that doesn't make much sense.

 

Not sure what the New Republic Flight Academy has to do with anything.... In Empire Strikes Back, Dak AND Wes Janson were both gunners AND pilots.

Yes, it all depends on circumstances and need. Sometimes, due to capacity constraints, a pilot might have to serve as a gunner. This sort of thing happens all the time in warfare.

 

No, I don't see it happening. They specifically call her a gunner, so I'm 98% sure that that's what she is. Also it's stupid tactically, when you're a relatively small group, to waste your pilots as being gunners.

 

I'm a gunner to. Gunna do all sorts of things. One day.

Actually, given how small of a group the Resistance seems to be, it perhaps makes more sense that over-specialization would be both tactically unwise and unrealistic. If you don't have enough troops, a pilot might have to serve as a gunner, or vice-versa. As I said, this sort of thing happens often in warfare. Particularly when a fighting force's readiness and operational capabilities are constrained by resource and personnel deficiencies. So declaring this possibility "stupid tactically" without having more information about the makeup of the Resistance/ New Republic force is, well, not entirely rational.

 

Let us go over this again, shall we?

The Resistance (at the time of TFA) consisted of a couple of dozen X-Wings and a few transports at most.

The New Republic Navy consisted of thousands of vessels.

The Resistance lost a few X-Wings at SKB but the New Republic Navy (most of which was at the Hosnian System) was decimated.

During the course of TLJ the Resistance somehow acquire a Mon Calamari Cruiser and a squadron of Bombers (this is just what we have seen, there could be more). Presumably this was the remnants of the New Republic Navy commanded by Vice Admiral Holdo. We can be fairly certain that the Resistance were never in possession of any Bombers before TLJ as they would have been used on the SKB Oscillator.

The New Republic Navy would have sufficient personnel to train Flight Crew on a specific 'career path'. The Bombers look to have seen some service but are not battle damaged, therefore we can expect that the crews came included fit and well.

Rose could start the movie suspecting that her sister was killed when the Hosnian System was destroyed. That could make for an emotional reunion later in the movie.

 

Huh, on the Lego box it says Paige is a 'Resistance' Gunner not a New Republic Gunner....

 

When Poe/Leia take command it will be the Resistance. There is no New Republic.

 

I understand there is no New Republic... you are the one who keeps saying that Holdo & the bombers w/ pilots & gunners are all from the New Republic Navy. But are we even sure of that? And even if Holdo & the bombers are, that doesn't mean Paige came with them, otherwise why is Poe 'coaching' her on what to do? If Rose is already with the Resistance it makes sense that Paige is as well.

 

We are not 100% sure of anything. Vice Admiral Holdo has to be a Vice Admiral of something. Likewise the Bombers, A-Wings and the Mon Calamari Cruiser had to come from somewhere, they certainly weren't part of the Resistance during TFA. The most logical conclusion is that they are/were part of the decimated New Republic Fleet.

Poe is the most experienced and talented pilot in the Resistance, if not the whole New Republic, he has the right to dish out tips to those less experienced.

So if she was already trained to be a gunner by the NRN, why would Poe being showing her what to do?
