Hey everyone... right now, I'm modelling a version of the M61 Vulcan Cannon, to be part of a Metal Gear I'm modelling for a fanfilm... mind you this is only my second model and it's in blender... but I'd say its pretty good for only my second try at modelling :)

Heres the wireframe and the solid...

Please let me know how it looks, what I need to change, etc...

    Thanks! :D

    Cheers

Nice modelling! I'd like to see a render of it.

One thing though; how did you smooth the gun barrells? From the wire-frame, it looks like you subdivided it a whole lot. You can achieve the same smooth effect with much fuller vertices (faster rendering) by selecting the faces you want smoothed in EDIT mode (you would just want to select the curved side of the cylinder) and then going to the EDITING (F9) tab and pressing SET SMOOTH. This will decrease your render times, and increase the performance of blender when you model without any noticable difference (if you do get a noticeable difference, just subdivide once or twice and apply).

    Good luck with your project!

Thanks... however it may look like it, i didnt subdivide the barrels any, they each have 32 vertices, i dont know why they look so thick... and yea i knew about the SET SMOOTH thing ;)

Cool! I didn't figure out SET SMOOTH for at least a month after I had blender. Really a critical button/feature/pain.

Like I said before, looking good!

One problem though, when I render it, it looks extremely fake, as in... too much like a cheezy model... is that because of the lack of textures? or something with the model?

Also, bump mapping... do you know a tutorial or somewhere to get me started on that?

Its a combination of things; no textures and bad lighting (you probably just have the original light) probably being the worst 2. Try deleting the light and rendering with Ambient Occlusion (its under the Shading tab, then press the world button). This will improve the look of the model because it adds soft shadows, as apposed to the hard shadows you get with just a normal light.

It also would help if you added some grime to your model. Check out the free samples from DV Garage's Surface Toolkit (http://dvgarage.com/tut/tut.php?view=dvg, free membership required). You can easily add these textures to your models, or modify them with Photoshop/Gimp and get some good looking results.

I'll look around, but nothing really comes to mind right now. I assume you know how to add one in general, but if you don't, its labeled as NOR (normal) under the MAP TO button of SHADING (far right).

    Thanks Joek1010! That really helped...

heres a really quick test render I did with no other texture than leather for the straps, and a little grime from that website :)
