I am inadvertantly part of the debate since I do silly things like post speculative science articles. OH FOR SHAME!

Doing abstract math in a vacuum is really hard, actually. There's nothing to breathe and particles keep annihilating around you.

Anyone who bought a ticket to the Moon for a fortune is looking pretty silly right now.

I like the part where I said no one should do any research on it.

    ...oh wait no I didn't.

Every post so far in your thread says as such.

Huh. I guess "we're no where close to building a working model" = "no one should do any research or experiments."

    YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST

They really don't, and furthermore the sickening insistence of warp drive's "inevitability" in science fiction fandom circles tends to indicate those folks can talk the talk but they can't walk the walk.

I think most serious "futurologists" (assuming that isn't an oxymoron) consider it more likely that space will have to eventually be colonized a. the old fashioned way, or b. by posthuman machines.

Those are two ways, yes, but I think that its a mistake to assume that they are the ONLY ways.

I'm sure we'll get help from Space Elves using applied phlebotinum.

    I always enjoy these threads.

People get excited over something fantastical (usually VLM) and Ramza and Vivec show up and go "not really" and hilarity ensues.

Regardless, I learn a bit and laugh a lot.

We should do this more often.

Alternatively, maybe the grant reviewers see an experiment about notochord differentiation in lampreys and approve it because of its intrinsic contributions to the body of human knowledge, not because they think its their last obstacle to spending the next Valentine's Day with a genetically engineered Twi'ilek prostitute?

There were like two of them total. I'd hardly chart that as making a huge dent in ending twi'lek indentured servitude.
