With Dooku and Grievous dead and the Droid Army driven into the Outer Rim, Palpatine was ready to execute the final stages of the Grand Plan. Regardless of whether Anakin joined him or not, Sidious would have executed Order 66 and wiped out the Jedi.

The justification for Order 66 was just something that Palpatine used too placate the Senate.

The official description of Order 66 reads:

Order 66: In the event of Jedi officers acting against the interests of the Republic, and after receiving specific orders verified as coming directly from the Supreme Commander (Chancellor), GAR commanders will remove those officers by lethal force, and command of the GAR will revert to the Supreme Commander (Chancellor) until a new command structure is established.

Notice that it never mentions any justification or a Senate vote. If he wanted, Palpatine could wake up, get his coffee, check his stocks and send a pre-recorded message to all clone commanders, telling them to execute Order 66.

And they would do it, obediently and without question.

Palpatine wouldn't even have to meet a Jedi that day, he could issue the order at any point during the war.

    that is mostly true

Their plan was not to kill him, merely to tell him to release his emergency powers. You see, if they kill him, how exactly do they explain why they did it to the senate? They have no proof that he is a Sith Lord, and Palpatine covered his tracks very well.

Palpatine could have put Order 66 on at any time. And it was not dependent on Anakin, nor was it dependent on Shmi's death.

Yes. Sidious either arranged or allowed for the death of Shmi, the mother of Anakin.

Sidious was most likely responsible for the following:

    1. Sidious was behind the Trade Federation, the Blockade on Naboo, etc...

    2. the clone army

    3. the rise of the clone wars

    4. Jar Jar Binks motioning for Emergency Powers to be granted to Sidious

    5. the death of Shmi

    6. the death of Quin Gon Jin

    7. the defeat of Darth Maul

    8. the nightmares Anakin had of Padme dying in child-birth

    9. telling Anakin of the legends of Plagueis, whether they are true or not

    10. the failed assassination of Padme, which gave Anakin an excuse to protect & date Padme

    11. death of Dooku

    12. death of Grevious

    13. death of Mace Windu

    14. supplying the weapons and armies for the republic and for the separatists

    15. letting Kenobi slice up Vader just like Kenobi sliced up Maul 13 years before that

    16. Sidious probably wanted Vader to be stuck into a black suite, to better control Vader

    17. Sidious probably allowed Kenobi & Jin to discover nine year old Anakin on purpose

    18. Sidious befriended Anakin in the same way Plagueis befriended Sideous

    19. Sidious made sure that nine year old Anakin fell in love with Padme, to help seduce Anakin

    20. Sidious probably told Dooku to slice off Anakin's hand in the Attack of the Clones, to help fuel Anakin to the dark side more.

There was only one factor that contributed to Anakin turning to the dark side:

George Lucas needed him to become Vader. And that's it.

    Anakin''s turn was handled poorly...

But to answer your original question:

No, it seems he simply used it to his advantage.

Sidious killed Shmi mostly through not saving her.

Using that logic, the same could be said for Obi-Wan. Or Artoo. Or Dexter Jetsetter.

I remember, back after AOTC had just been released, there being a lot of talk whether or not Dooku had a hand in Shmi being taken captive by Tusken Raiders. I cannot remember the explanation, but it had some logic to it.

Maybe it was just a freak occurrence, in no way connected to anyone's master plan. Maybe, apart from creating Anakin's fear of losing loved ones, it happened to give Anakin a reason never to return to his home planet again (until the Clone Wars movie changed that).

I'm not very knowledgable on the Expanded Universe and its authors. What makes Kevin J. Anderson a controversial SW novelist? I couldn't find the answer on Wookiepedia.

Ah gees... where to begin. As Star Wars authors go, he's pretty terrible. One of his books, Darksaber is probably in the top three worst EU book I've read. (The other two beings The Crystal Star and Children Of The Jedi) His characterizations of the main cast is tenuous at best and he has an unhealthy obsessions with superweapons, such as the absurdly conceived Suncrusher.

Sidious can see the future and probably saw that Shmi was going to die.

First of all, in the deleted script of episode 2 AOTC, Dooku sent the sandpeople to kill Shmi skywalker, and deleted stuff is canon........

Without one factor, the other factors cannot happen.....
Yes, their/the plan was not to kill Darth Sidious, but that is irrelevant to my main point about Order 66.......

The clone troopers had Order 66 implanted into them, so I don't know either way.......

Deleted scenes in the script aren't canon unless they're filmed. Also, you're making that up as it was never in the script to begin with.

Anakin skywalker was not needed to defeat the Galactic Empire, the rebels could have, and would have, won without him. Luke or no Luke, Anakin or no Anakin, Lando and the rebels annihilate and destroy and blow up the 2nd Death Star (DS2), and Darth Sidious dies on it, along with all of the other imperial officials!!!:D

Sooo...Luke can drag 200+ pounds of his dad to a shuttle and still have time to escape, and somehow Palpatine can't casually walk to the elevator and then board his shuttle? Riight. :p
