I just wait for the other person to say whatever they're gonna say and then say "you too!"

Then she'll suddenly blurt out "You too!" and leave.

Don't you live in a country too small to properly say bye to anyone? Can't really do it if you can still see them after having left.

You say it best when you say nothing at all.

One of my friends calls that "walkward." When you say goodbye to someone and then continue walking in the same direction.

Ah, yes, this is what a happily introverted recluse like myself also calls "hell on earth."

In appropriate NY City Style, throw the bird and say "Fuggetta about it".

I always split the goodbye evenly by the number of people leaving.

Debo - you're Dutch. Can't you just say "Ok, we're finished talking now" and get away with it as being direct?

also something we do here is say hei (hi, if guessing what it was in english was difficult to you) when we hang up the phone. but it's only on the phone. you can't say hei when you leave a face to face conversation. then you'd be a weirdo.

I feel like saying "hi" to end a conversation might've already tipped a person over the edge. Saying it face-to-face is worse how?

and sometimes younger people will say "snakes on a plane" before they leave. because they started saying "sneiks" (pronounced snakes) instead of "snakkes" (translation: "talks!", like in talk to you later) because younger people like doing that with words. so that's something here i guess.

i've started using the phrase "younger people", apparently. i wonder when i became older people.

i don't know. it's just the way it is.

I'm usually an "okay, bye" but I have been known to use 'bye-bye' on occasion.

My coworkers seem to not know this social nicety of indicating that you are getting off the phone. At least once a shift I end up talking to myself because they got their answer and hung up, meanwhile I had something I needed to say or tell them. It's driving me insane!

No, the Dutch are never direct actually. Probably because at heart we're a trading nation. We never say what we really think. We use odd, formal constructions whenever we need something from someone, that hinge on archaic words and expressions--written Dutch more than anything. We never argue, we quickly try to find common ground, compromise. When we are direct however, we are blunt and rude. That's also when the pseudo-English comes into play.

It's the latter I'm referring to.

If an idea is stupid, saying "That's stupid".

Apply it to conversations for instant oranje success!

Don't correct Ender about Dutch culture. He thinks he's Dutch almost as much as he thinks he's English.
