JCC we need a whiskey thread

what's your favorite whiskey? what have you tried lately and how did it turn out?

i went to total wine last night and was thisclose to buying a bottle of highland park 12 but I wimped out and went with four roses instead. not disappointed.

ALSO I saw that there's now a bulliet 10 year out. Has anybody tried that? I'm not really a fan of bulliet. I mean it's decent but i think it's over hyped because of the cool bottle and hipster vibe etc.

 

used to have a collection of single malts, but I've given up the hard stuff. I have a glass of wine or two once a week when I'm at dinner with friends. Also, I emptied out my liquor cabinet for pain control before I had the root canal done.

And like most plebs who only know it from Parks and Rec my favorite is 16-year-old Lagavulin.

What these plebs don't know is that it's an Islay (pronounced "I-LAH") malt and its peat bog and smoky flavor is second to none...except maybe Laphroaig.

Edit 4: I realize I may have insinuated Laphroaig's peat and smoky goodness was possibly superior to Lagavulin's. I did not intend that and of COURSE Lagavulin reigns supreme as the King of the Islay Malts.

 

Pretty sure it was called "Single Malt Scotches".

However, I'm starting to think I am lost on the internet again.

I love me some Jameson. Just bought a Jameson Caskmates bottle and I think I'm in

 

I'm more of a rum guy. Do we have a rum thread?

 

Rum is good but whisky is 4 the machismo.

 

Lagavulin is, in fact,the nectar of the gods, but unfortunately has become far too expensive. I find Highland Park a suitable, lower priced alternative.

Or Lathrop when I'm in the mood. If I'm not, I come close to vomiting when I open the bottle.

 

Do most of you drink it straight or mix it?

If you do anything with single malt other than pour it in a glass and drink it, you should be flayed.

*sigh* I remember when Whisky Wednesday with my friends up at college was still a thing.

 

Either whiskey & ginger or on the rocks, depending on my mood.

 

Ginger ale I hope? Not ginger beer because bleh.

it better be like jameson or something. if you mix ginger ale with a nice sip like basil hayden or lagavulin or something you don't have a soul and gtfo

tried some small batch four roses the other night. it was real good. a little smoother and lighter than the normal stuff.

I would like to branch out in regards to whiskey, but so many of the brands are expensive.

 

what do you consider expensive? give us a price range you're comfortable with and we can give you suggestions!!

edit: also i feel your pain. literally all i want in the world is like a $400/mo fine cigar and whisky budget but for some reason i can't find a patron.

 

Er, $20-30? Actually, I get really nervous spending over $20 in a liquor store for some reason.

 

Blended, single malt, bourbon, who cares? Its all good to me.

 

Whiskey is also my drink of choice. Give me some Glenfiddich.

 

if offered i will gladly drink a whiskey sour, whiskey ginger, whiskey coke, etc., but i just don't have a taste for it straight, no matter how "good" the particular brand is. it tastes like poison mixed with fire. people claim to enjoy the taste, but i can't imagine that if there was a non-alcoholic variety of whiskey anyone would drink that **** ever.
