It's honestly one of the best bourbons I've ever had.

Looks like a gimmick bottle but never judge a book OR BOTTLE by its cover/label! I'll try it if its at a bar.

Did some whiskey sampling with friends last night, by which I mean that we drank a lot of whiskey. Tried Four Roses Small Batch, which was delicious, Jameson Black Barrel, very good, and Hochstadter's Slow and Low Rock and Rye. It's a rye with orange and honey added, and it's very sweet and incredibly orangey. It wasn't unpleasant, but it was a little much for me. It would probably go well in a cocktail, and made a nice change of pace, but I was glad we had other whiskeys to alternate with it.

i think the whole "portland whisky named after a civil war general famous for his facial hair" is a bit gimmicky, given that burnside has nothing to do with portland or this whisky -- or even bourbon in general near as i can tell -- but i wouldnt say the bottle itself really is

Wait what? You do know that the major street that divides ALL of Portland north from south is called Burnside right?

oh yeeeaaahhh. no, you're right, i had forgotten that. i guess they do have a tenuous link there. still pretty gimmicky, but then all whisky marketing is. id certainly agree with you that its hardly a reason not to try the stuff. it isnt even exceptionally gimmicky by industry standards

Yes I think what's weird is the choice of picture. Ambrose Burnside has nothing to do with Burnside Street. That was named after a Portland merchant. So using the picture of the dude after whom the term "sideburns" was coined is very hipster. But then, it IS Portland...

Also Burnside was a pretty lousy general.

Scotch is my drink but I've been trying to branch out.

So on this week's business trip to Missouri I asked at the hotel bar if they had anything local. Had a rye whiskey that was good although I don't have much of a comparison point. Turned out costing 12 freaking bucks though.

bevmo had some japanese stuff i hadn't seen on the shelves before today, and i had some birthday money to burn, so im having Mars Iwai Tradition for the first time as i write this... its good, similar to the other japanese stuff ive had (all from Suntory) -- the sort of perfect middle between a fruity spey and a peated islay that the japanese whisky producers seem to go for. its got a peppery/gingery thing going on in the finish, and grapey/fruity at the start

its their mid-tier expression and i'd rate it above the 12 year hakushu but below the 12 year yamazaki. maybe below the 12 year hibiki as well. its a blended (unlike hakushu and yamazaki, which are billed as single malt) so the best direct comparison is probably to hibiki... if you're concerned about category
