I think KJA and KKR do a good job of trying to make Wedge an important character. It only feels off until you remember that the X-Wing novels suffered a sort of second-class status because they didn't follow Luke, Leia, and Han, and thus that characterization of Wedge wasn't considered important until Zahn made Corran and Wedge major players in Vision of the Future.
Fair point. I don't know what that time was like since I got my first book in 98 or so roughly and didn't get some of the Bantam novels until after 2000. I got the Jedi Academy trilogy first and the Thrawn trilogy and the X-Wings later, way later.
I read a few things before I got to the X-Wing series: Hand of Thrawn; I, Jedi; Union; then Thrawn Trilogy. (I was following my big brother Luke's recommended order). Then I got into Truce at Bakura (which I loved Wedge in) and the Jedi Academy Trilogy (which I wasn't any sort of happy with Wedge in, because who was this blue featherbrain?)
I don't hate Qui, but I do think that Allston's scene with Qui and Wedge in Starfighters of Adumar is really, really well thought through. I just wish other authors had done more than have her be annoying in Ruin afterwards.
