Next we will need a tutorial on how to bump threads.

btw: Alternately, you can use an image more like this, if you like:

    I'm still surprised this isn't a sticky.

    It deserves stick-status...

A thread must be created as a sticky by a mod. An existing thread cannot be made into one.

That being said, we should have a sticky thread like this one made.

Hey everyone, just thought I'd say hello and also let you know that you can get full version software (not some stupid hacked junk) REALLY CHEAP! We liquidate student-priced software so you can get products like Adobe Premiere Pro or Adobe After Effects for as little as $200! As I said, these are FULL versions that are guaranteed to work!!! E-mail for more info and have a great day!

Right.. since this thread needs bumping anyways, here's a question :
How do the professionals do the Force Powers (esp. Force Pull, Push, Grip)

And How do you film saber combats that require lots of jumping if you cannot afford wireworks?

    Thanks

It's sort of sticky since the Tutorials link on top points to it. But no one ever notices.

The answer to the N00bs questions are fairly simple:
How do the professionals do the Force Powers (esp. Force Pull, Push, Grip)

Usually a combination of wires and clever filming techniques.

And How do you film saber combats that require lots of jumping if you cannot afford wireworks?

Clever filming techniques. It is quite possible to do a lot of different stuff with clever editing. Like, you can have a guy jump. Then have him land REALLY far away simply by editing out all the time it takes to jump up and down in 2 different places.

Use your imagination for clever editing before thinking everything needs to be done with special effects.

Take a look at this Superfast Running tutorial for a better explanation of what I was just saying.

What if I want to shoot wideangle? Like Yoda jumping over Dooku...

BTW, is there any guide on how to home make wire works?

There's actually a link in this thread to a writeup that forum member tumblemoster wrote that was a really good primer on wire work.

With his permission, I posted the complete text on this page for easy lookup. :)

As durb said, even the pros usually do most basic force effects through routine site gags and quick edits.

As for the wide angle stuff...
CGI characters are getting used more and more for this sort of thing.
Usually, the actors will be scanned by a 3D scanner to produce very accurate models and motion capture and enhancements are applied through something like MotionBuilder.

TV work isn't as demanding as film (lower resolution, less color depth) so a model can be made from photo reference or with Photogrametry using Realviz.

There are lots of low cost options open to hobbiests. Animation:Master and Poser come to mind as low cost chararter animation options. There may be others.

    Have fun.

    You mean like this ???

    Complete Resource List
For those with a budget in mind, there is literally a whole universe of freeware programs out there. I systematically (from my own experiences and those of users of this board) have gone through and found all the ones that seem to be generally accepted as "The Best Ones" from all that's out there. Here are the few, the proud, the best darn freeware programs out there for your editing pleasure. You could make a whole movie for free (provided you had a camera...) with these programs!

Can I use a Sony DVD HandyCam and bypass using some kind of video interface device if I have a DVD drive?
I need to buy a camera to start my movie and don't want to have to buy a x-fer card if I don't have to.

Depends on your software and the quality you want.

DVD camcorders often record audio using dolby's AC-3 format. While this is typically not a problem for mid to high end editing applications, many consumer level editing programs are still catching up and don't support this audio format yet.

Also, DVD camcorders record using MPEG compression which tends to throw away a lot more real information than the DV file format. Bluescreen effects will likely be more difficult than with a DV camcorder.

I don't have a DVD Handycam, but a client just gave me a pile of discs from one as source material for an editing project. I'm not sure if it was just the camera or the settings he used, but the quality of the video was pretty poor IMO, even for a single CCD cam.

    Have fun.
