Um, not to be a spoilsport, but isn't it kind of hard to get chummy with the folks in Sweden when I can't understand the language?

Perhaps I should just take that as a challenge and pick up a new language, eh?

    :)

    Hello.

It seems I am the first swede to visit your board :).

EDIT: all our members can understand English so language isn't really a problem.

    Thank you :).

Besides, Swedish is a small language whereas English a world language. It makes sense we'd learn it in school.

You are of course welcome to visit our board. :)

... maybe now we can start a sweedish sig.... and have committee meetings... and decide which word we want to learn first... then change it three times.... and not tell anyone... then get pi$$y and complain about how we never learn anything new anymore.... and about how they are are the only ones who are polyglottal.... and have one of the officers put all the cost of language tapes on one of their credit cards..... then have people complain and fight about it until it moves off to page 2 obscurity..... yep, this is going to be GREAT!!!!

Ah, the Swedish Chef whose speech is in fact a corrupted version of a dialect spoken in a village just a few miles from my hometown :D.

So what Swedish words do you want to learn? I assume you want to know really useful words and not just greetings etc ;).

It's "rättviksmål". The Swedish chef is based on a guy from Rättvik who worked as a chef in New York.

    Hi!

Kee here...another Swede. ;) To answer Naboo Queen's question, yes, Swedish is a german language - actually, both German, Swedish and English (and a lot of other languages) has the same origin. *pauses* I think.

Yes, very true. English is a Germanic language, NOT one of the "Romance" ie Latin-based languages. Although, English assimilates or "anglicizes" nearly everything it comes into contact with. That is why I thank God I was raised speaking it. I can't imagine having to learn something so bizarre.

    To our new friends, WELCOME!

Up until some time in after the Norman invasion the vikings had very few problems understanding the Saxons when they popped by.

    Greetings Indy Knights!
I'm the not-so-resident Wookiee of FF Sweden ... and a language geek to boot! ;)

The modern standard Germanic languages are divided into two main branches.

    West Germanic languages:
    • English
    • Frisian
    • Netherlandic (Dutch or Flemish)
    • Afrikaans
    • German
    • Yiddish
    North Germanic (or Scandinavian) languages:
    • Swedish
    • Danish
    • Norwegian (Dano-Norwegian and New Norwegian)
    • Icelandic
    • Faroese
There was also an East Germanic branch, but those languages are all extinct.

I've had a few friends from various countries over the years, and they all seem to say English is the hardset language to learn as a second language. I guess our language is as much a mut as we Americans are. Try and find an American with all their roots from just one country.

I studied a little spainish in high school and was amazed at how often you could find root similarites in the two. Especially when you look at the Latin roots and what not.

I'm no linguist or anything but I find it interesting.
