Well hate to sound monotonous, but once people found out that they had far more options of how to spend their spare time than go to church, religion began to fade into irrelevance.

However, it can only now make a comeback through some sort of 'alternative' offering of modern spirituality.

YES, privatise the Church (Well it used to be heavily institutionalised)

But then again, God has a little competition that He has to contend with. People are discovering Buddhism, Feng Shui, Scientology and dozens of other potentially fulfilling spiritual gatherings or philosophies on life.
