wait so um, i just made an account today, and posted a long ass profile for an rpg, did the move already happen? i didnt read all this stuff till after I posted it, and if so whats the new website called?

The move hasn't happened yet. When it does, the URL will stay the same, but the site'll be down for a week or so and look different when it's back. However, the MS will give as much warning as possible before it happens.

 

Would it then trigger a massive flame war, bannings, hatred and acrimony and all that good stuff automatically?

We don't really know how long it'll be between the old boards going down and the new ones getting up. It won't be immediate, though, because all the data has to be converted, etc. That's just an estimate.

 

So I take it there is still no date on the move.

Why will it be down for a week? DNS takes max 48hrs to propagate, generally far less for most. If you cut off the old site, do a change-only import then point to the new server, most people should be able to access it within hours.

 

Because it's not as simple as "copy database to new server" - we're moving to vBulletin which is an entirely different board system, so we'll have to basically export, reformat, and then import the data. And because nobody really uses ignboards, nobody's written conversion scripts, so we have to do that ourselves.

It might not take the entire week if we're lucky, though.

 

Granted I don't know much about writting programs but it takes over a year to write a conversion program?

At the rate we're going, it'll be Prince-(ss)in-the-future that will be King/Queen (meaning William and Kate's son or daughter) by the time we move...

And you'll do your best to save ALL the data? I'm worried about my fanfics...I don't have current backups on this newer computer.
