No, I don't think so. In any case, "betaboards.theforce.net" just takes you right back here.

Tunick: See the screenshots Grimby posted in the MSU thread from the 2005 test board. It looks reasonably close to what the JC looks like, though as I understand it, it's way different under the hood (i.e. the options screens will look different for the users, etc.)

DLB/Coruscant: The test board was not publically available. Betaboards.theforce.net is just the domain header to the server IGN uses to push new code. All it does it allow you to preview updates that IGN has in the pipe, and occasioanlly, to access the JC when the main url is down.

The database used is exactly the same, so of course it's going to look like it's the same place. The only difference is the code.

Ok, maybe I'm remembering seeing some screen shots or something.

I do remember screenshots from several years ago (in addition to the ones in the thread in the last two days). I think Dingo or Raven or someone posted them to lay to rest for the final time the worry that the boards wouldn't look exactly the same.

We were in the middle of pruning Halloween icons. What is the game plan now? Finish fast, keep our current pace, or stop?

Definitely not finish fast. I like my Halloween icon!

The actual move won't take place immediately. You (or Nat, really) likely have time to keep going. Doesn't mean trying to speed up the process wouldn't be a good idea, but its not like you'll have to finish next week or anything.

He's also the PR guy for it. Every programmer needs a PR guy. :D :D :p

It's tailored to the boards, that's right - I won't go into the technical details, but I'd actually reckon it would be easier to adapt to another ignboards system than the new vB JC. It's still probably doable, but I haven't had a chance to see how it might work on vB yet.

Yes and no; it's an adaptation of that program. The underlying techniques are similar but the functionality is different.

Anyway, the program itself will be released as soon as I figure out a way to make it easy to install/set up/use. Right now getting it running on Windows 7 x64 involves installing three other things and fiddling with the registry.

As long as things aren't radically different, I can live with that. Also, markup codes ( :p ) will still be the same....................................right?

Just to fully clarify since nearly everyone has forgotten this, but the original arrangement that was made with IGN was that the TFN forums would be hosted by IGN for free in turn for a) ad space on all relevant pages whose revenue would go to IGN to help off-set costs; and b) use of TFN as a testing bed for features between release from the beta testing site and full deployment to IGN's forums to find any last bugs. That was a 5 year deal that then was not going to be renewed in lieu of a payment scheme that was outside TFN's budgetting range last time we went down this path, to which a non-disclosed arrangement was reached to extend IGN's hosting.

To add to that, about 8 months ago IGN was in the process of putting (larger) ads back up on the boards to start generating revenue again. That never panned out for whatever reason (I was never told). At some point about a year ago, IGN laid off a lot of their staff and brought in some new people to run their community portals. This was the team tasked with providing support for us. Then two weeks ago, IGN laid off 1/3 of their entire staff, so whatever deal they had in place with us looks to be dead. They're still hosting us now, but it will only be until they decide to change their data structure or move to a new software platform. We have absolutely no technical support from them anymore.

So is anyone* interested in making a temporary forum on some free forum site that we can register at if we want to, just incase disaster struck and the boards went down before the move was completed? That way, the community at large would retain contact with each other (and not just those who happen to be on each other's friends and buddy lists), and would have some way of rebuilding.

Any possibility of improving the image support? Full-sized images would be best, but even if that's not possible, can we at least make sure that thumbnails maintain the correct proportions and items smaller than the standard thumbnail aren't blown up? It would be very helpful.

Seconded, and not just because it's been Light's hobby horse for the past few years. An image system that doesn't code off an abacus would be a huge improvement. :)

    So, moving, huh?

Gosh ... hope I can preserve my last two years of posts in my RPG over in NSWRPF. But since I've got three mods playing in it I hope that won't be a problem :D

So thats how you snatched them. I was snatching them off this board and uploading them into msn messenger to use and I've snatched others off of other boards to use. It's not really that big of an issue

I want to know if Tunick is really going to shave the beard and stop posting in red like he promised :p

We're going to try to make this all as painless as possible. But stuff happens. Let us know about any questions or concerns you have :)

vB has a lot of options for styling - we'll try to get things as close to the current design as we can. The nice thing is we'll have actual control over the templates, so we can make improvements if needed.
Not sure that would be worth the effort given the number of users we have here. Plus, there would be no way for us to merge that data with the new boards. As soon as we can muster it, we'll have the new vB installation up and running with the same root domain everyone is used to - maybe we could even put a temporary landing page up so nobody freaks out. :p

I remember working on something like this last time around. I believe I had the code working, though it was never implemented into the test site.

Just for the record... I was waiting to see if it wasn't an April Fools joke because last year, there was this whole thing with WNU's Mole Game temporarily getting "canceled" when it wasn't, in actuality, getting canceled, just getting a new shiny thread. Around the time that no Mods denied it for the sixth, rather humourous, time, I started to believe. Well played, all.

Going back to the watchful shadows now. :)

    Hmm, interesting.

So, are the new boards the same or do they allow for a few more Mod options - like merging threads?

Because that could be very useful, if technically permitted.
