"we've entered the Atmosphere"

    Simply the Invisable Hand came in at an uncontrolable speed and met friction.All other ships we have seen have had control over speed and rate of decent.A ship slowly and controlled entering an atmosphere would not meet the friction a ship out of control and nose divig would.

    I believe it is the lower atmosphere.

    You have to remember there is many atmospheric layers, and one of them happens to be called "Atmosphere" the battle most likely happen in the exosphere of the planet.

    You also have to remember that none of this is remotely real and GL can bend and even break the rules about space travel, reentry into the planet's atmosphere, the effect the atmosphere on space craft, etc...

    Absolutely true.
    There's probably a message board in the Galaxy Far, Far Away where they are discussing 2001: A Space Odyssey.
    On those boards, there is a topic entitled: "Why is it totally silent in space - where's all the engine noises and explosions...?"
