True, but I think what they do in the beginning is keep you isolated from anything that's not pre-approved by the higher ups and such.

So if you haven't ever seen the expose sites, you're not going to be aware of what it's really about.

I don't know the first thing about it, but I do drive past the Scientology head office/church/whatever you call it here in Sydney as I do my shopping. The ramp to the carpark goes straight past about 4 floors of the building and there's some big money tied up in there, let me tell you. It's got the most grossly opulent decor you've ever seen. Gold, leather, chandaliers, wood furniture and doors etc.

edit: Sydeny? I came over all Jaun Antonio Samaranch for a moment there.

Sounds like my place back home. ;)

I had a friend who went in there once. He was insanely intelligent and more than a little haughty (dux of the school who wasn't a total nerd type), and decided to argue with them. They let him out 6 hours later, and from all accounts his face contained the kind of grin reserved usually for the label "****-eating", as in he had a "****-eating grin".

Yeah, and other religious buildings are completely humble. ;)

The Vatican is humble city. Didn't you see the pine box the Pope got buried in?

St. Peter's Basilica is humble? Besides, I wasn't referring to just Roman Catholics (though there are the numerous Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals in France and Germany)-- there's Hagia Sophia, the Mosque in Cordoba, the Temple of the Rock, those elaborate Russian Orthodox churches, etc. etc.

My point was that you should criticize Scientologists for their idiotic beliefs, not how much they spend on their buildings. ;)

As I said, I don't know anything about them except their opulent building.

Don't forget the Scientology literature that claims Jesus was a boy lover.

Scientology, tho...yeesh...that's a real load. Alien exterminations? H-bombs? I can't believe people would actually believe that kind of rubbish, but I suppose that they've been brainwashed enough you could tell them that an evil monkey would bite them and give them rabies if they didn't sign over all their assets to the organization.

Yeah they should have kept it more realistic like the Earth being 6000 years old or women being created from the rib of a man or a guy taking every animal on earth onto a boat...

A lot of not-so-humble religious structures were constructed back when those religions were not-so-humble - they were opulent and virtually totalitarian. The buildings were built at great cost, but only because those religious institutions ordered them.

Nowadays, if any one of them were to order something on the same scale, no one would take on the job. Many of those buildings took decades, even centuries to complete.

Scientology is a creepy totalitarian cult that's stealing actors one-by-one. Tom Cruise, John Travolta and many other famous and lesser-known celebrities are now members.

All I know is that Scientology is an organization founded by a science fiction writer and that many Hollywood celebrites are members. Also, the organization solicits funds from its members, giving me the impression that they only care for money.

Yep, you pretty much nailed it, except you forgot to mention that Hubbard was a BAD sci-fi writer. Hell, I'd join the Cult of Cthulhu before I'd become a clam.

Speaking of-who would win in a fight: Xenu or Cthulhu? My money's on the latter.

Katie Holmes is considering converting from Catholicism to Scientology. How can anyone make such a leap in beliefs? How do you just change your core belief system for your boyfriend? Love is indeed blind.

There's no "considering" about it-she's already done so.

And by love, I think you mean "fame-whoring."

I am beginning to think it is a highly profitable organizaion that offers self help courses loosly based on psychology and doing what is necessary to keep itself in the "religion" category.

Tom Cruise is not setting an example that I can see anyone wanting to follow. His divorce, his public attacks on Brooke Sheilds, his goofy behavior with his new gal pal. Scary.

Anyone know what their beliefs are on sex? Is Tom Cruise having sex with his new gal and is that ok in Scientology?

Feng Shui, Kabbala, Scientology, Astrology. There's no belief so stupid and unfounded that it can't garner a huge following.

I think there's something useful about Feng Shui. What's wrong with getting rid of clutter and simplifying your surroundings?

Even though Madonna is full of it about Kabbala, there is some legitimacy to this mystical branch of Judaism. But only Hebrew scholars with years of experience and a masterful understanding of the Torah can begin to study Kabbala.

And there's no "self-help" about it, either. They charge you out the ass so they can mess up your head, induce nervous breakdowns, all so you'll pay them to "clear you."

There is nothing wrong with redecorating your house. The problem is that feng shui "specialists" demand money because of their claims that feng shui is actually a science, which it is not. Watch "Penn & Teller's Bull****!"...they had a whole episode devoted to these morons and their scams.

Guin, have you seen the website xenu.net? Good site, has lots of testimony from ex-Scientologists. That site convinced me what a load of garbage Scientology is.
