First book was great. Just got started on this one last night. Over 1,100 pages so I'll enjoy this very much.

Just finished "Star Wars: Dark Disciple" by Christie Golden. Lays on the melodrama a bit thick at times, and the characters do head-scratching things just a bit too often, but it's otherwise reasonably well written and very character driven. - 6.5/10

About to begin "Mr. Penubra's 24-Hour Bookstore" by Robin Sloan.

I liked it better than the first, and this is one of the best books I have ever read. The author is apparently a perfectionist and as a result the 3rd book is taking awhile. I literally was only halfway done and on a Saturday elected not to go out for the day and did nothing but read this.

Reread n where n = Too damn many + 1. But, uh, it's a new version to replace my old worn out mass market paperback set, so it's less egregious? Let's go with that.

Barbarians to Angels: The Dark Ages Reconsidered

Very interesting but not really deep academic analysis either. It is making me what to read more on the topic, so mission accomplished I guess. :)

Alright I finished it. It was a fun read and I generally liked it. I enjoyed the technical aspects of Watney's survival. It was fascinating and clear to follow. That's definitely Weir's strength. I found Watney amusing, but sometimes his personality grated on me (the boobies line for example) The writing was average, but that was okay, I wasn't looking for a masterpiece. The log system was good, but I felt it left too much on the table. I would've liked to have seen more of Mars as a setting, more a description of the plains, the hills Mark traveled through. I could barely visualize it at all, and that was disappointing. Weir had a prime opportunity to really shine as a writer, but never utilized it. Maybe he felt he couldn't do it justice, as it would seem like a no-brainer for any other writer to take a crack at it Less importantly, I would've liked to have seen more of the Ares 3 team, the Houston team and the general public's reaction. But I suppose we'll get that in the movie.

Yeah. The movie looks like it could be fantastic. I haven't had a chance to read The Martian, as I'm still plowing through Michener's Alaska, but I am really looking forward to reading The Martian. It appears to be a classic in the making.

You are standing in a room filled with books, faced with a difficult decision. Suddenly, one with a distinctive cover catches your eye. It is a groundbreaking anthology of short stories from award-winning writers and game-industry titans who have embarked on a quest to explore what happens when video games and science fiction collide.

From text-based adventures to first-person shooters, dungeon crawlers to horror games, these twenty-six stories play with our notion of what video games can be—and what they can become—in smart and singular ways.
