Amph What book are you reading right now?

Huh. VadersLaMent, that sounds very, very interesting.

 

The job I started a few weeks back has a much longer commute via public transport so I've been reading a lot more frequently. Recently finished Cat's Cradle by Vonnegut, Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami, and Ghostwritten by David Mitchell. I liked them in that order, basically.

 

Currently reading (for the thousandth time) Sharon Shinn's Dark Moon Defender.

 

I just finished the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and plan to start the Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes tomorrow.

 

About to start Star Wars: Scourge.

Does anyone know where in the timeline it fits?

 

Just a few minutes ago I finished 1876 by Gore Vidal. Thought it was amazing.

 

According to the timeline in the recent X-wing book, Scourge takes place after The Hand of Thrawn duology and before Fool's Bargain and Survivor's Quest.

I also liked the Dante Valentine series, but I'm not really into steampunk so I will probably pass on Saintcrow's new series.

 

Thanks, I couldn't find it at first in the timeline in the book. It was hiding!

 

I'm not a steampunk person either, this is my first go in the genre. The only steampunk thing has been a clockwork horse that pulls a carriage for a brief sentence. It's early yet but it appears she will treat the steampunk in this as she treated the future scifi in Valentine, as a backdrop and nothing more.

I'm just a few chapters in and it is really good.

 

Finally bought and started reading The Unfinished Tales by J. R. R. Tolkien.

 

I've finished John Ronald Reuel Tolkien's The Silmarillion today at 3:15 AM. Now I'll start reading Donald Duck Sonderheft 78.

This is part of why I love being a history major. The required readings for my classes are actually fascinating.

 

That Out of the East book sounds like it could be really interesting. But it looks like its not by Brown, who I like.

 

You're right, it's Freedman, not Brown. Brown just has a quote on the front

 

I enjoyed that book when I read it. There's a fairly new one by the same author, The Time Traveler's Guide to Elizabethan England. Amazon UK . It's currently in HC and I'm waiting for the paperback, due out next year.

 

I'm about to start on "The Blinding Knife" by Brent Weeks, having recently finished "The Black Prism" -- which I very much enjoyed. Though I frequently had trouble picturing some of the things he was describing in my mind's eye. I have a bad mind's eye.

 

I've always enjoyed authors who can really put you in the context and mindset of a historical society. Philip Matyszak is great at doing this with early- to mid-principate Rome- his Legionary's Manual and Gladiator's Manual are excellent, and I've been meaning to pick up Rome on 5 Denarii a Day.
