The PT isn't needed. They could have easily been explained in the OT and beyond. Just take all the important elements and explain them as exposition through the characters that Luke meets on his journey.

Like in the fantasy stories or mythologies before, we as the audience attach ourselves to the hero. We learn about their environment and their personal history through the protaganist POV and the characters they meet along the way. You don't spend so much time on one character for three movies then replace that focus to another character for another three movies. What's the point. All that stuff beforehand could have been explained through dialouge.

Lucas should have ditched the PT and just made the six planned movies that would have focused on Luke's journey making each episode three years after each other in order to keep the hype in check. If Lucas had never put the numbers 4 and 5 into ANH and ESB, NOBODY would be clamoring for prequels.

The PT is nothing but a six hour prefix for the real story (OT) to begin.

Of course the PT's not NEEDED. ESB and ROTJ aren't NEEDED. They're simply addons to the original, expanding the story of ANH.
