I wouldn't mind if they started *completely* anew.

Like, just start from zero, or, well, the original trilogy. And just write stories from there.

I've always seen the EU as being just like Marvel. It officially has a single continuity that's been followed since 1976, but in reality there's several inconsistencies and hard-to-swallow retcons.

Because this is the first concrete move that makes the change hit home.

Also, probably because there's the feeling that with the old licensees in place who have the attachment to their material and the desire to continue profiting off their back catalog, there might be more pressure there to keep the old EU in place somehow -- reboot only after a given point in time, or do some "when that moon hit, Chewbacca got knocked clean to the Mortis Pyramid of Reality!" event. Nobody expects Marvel to fight against a clean slate.

The EU is dead come 2015. It's the only reason why we havent heard what the status of it will be.

I have very little hope that anything post-ROTJ will survive. And I fear Rebels or spin-off films might be the death knell for Han and Lando trilogies, among other things.

Just imagine if it was literally the only piece of the EU they decided to keep. Not only that, but they incorporated it into the ST! [face_rofl]

I have to admit, I would love to see Zorba the Hutt in the ST. :)

Come to think of it, TCW came about a hairsbreadth away from involving him in a story, what with the invention of his brother "Ziro." Makes me wonder if he's got a shot at Rebels.

Someday the EU will be dead and gone and Zorba and Maul will be laughing on its grave...

There was, but they could always post-prone events. For example Jacen and Jaina could be born later. "Rachel" and "Thomas" lines showed that they were related. Of course those lines could be as fake as the names.

If only they had agreed to have this level of continuity before everyone got invested in the EU.

It does irritate me how much they're talking about keeping true to the continuity going forward.

I wonder what will happen to pre-ROTJ events that tie in to post-ROTJ events. For example, does Exar Kun's spirit remain in the Yavin temple for all time? Do the thought bomb victims remain trapped on Ruusan for all time?

Unless some enterprising writer decides to tackle pieces of hanging EU lore they'll proceed to be kept hanging. Same deal happened with the Star Trek remake where the comics delved into a few things that "would have happened" ie. the V'Ger probe showing up.

I grow tired of this tomfoolery. Why do I get the feeling that we'll only know what's canon after half of the Lit forum hemorrhages after the first Episode VII trailer?

    It's the new TCW timeline.
I think they will play coy up until Episode VII is in theaters.

You have to admit the promise of this "story group" is tantalizing, but...

Are we being impatient? Are we rushing them? I honestly don't know. I don't want to be a greedy fan or anything but I still seriously doubt that the script to Episode VII is even finished. I really wish they would have taken their time and solidified everything before declaring that the movie is coming out December 2015...no matter what. I mean, they don't even want to maintain the continuity of having the movie come out in May. What makes any of us think they give a damn about the EU?

I feel like it's been Leeland Chee's job to make sense of continuity errors after there's some clash in continuity...does he really have a say in what actually happens beforehand?
