I take it to mean a small drinking establishment like a bar or a pub, possibly with an outdoor seating area like a cafe.

Tapcaf . . . cafe. A term first seen in HTTE, popularly continued in Bantam books.

I think its a combination of a tapas bar and a cafe.

It was originally "tapcafe" cf. The Last Command and various West End books, but seems to have lost the "e" since. Similarly, coffee is referred to as caf in Star Wars.

It's stupid how it's called "caff." Just call it coffee, dammit!

I assume that "tap" is the alcohol and "caf" is the coffee.

Isn't coffee called "cafe" in many European countries? So it's not like caf is anything strange.

Better that than Hambly's "coffeine". That was truly lame.

Knowing Zahn's unadultered nerdiness (hot chocolate.........) it always struck me as a bar like in Temple of Doom, where chicks tap dance and you can eat lunch.

i always assumed that a tapcafe was more a bar and grill than a coffee shop. a cantina generally is a bit larger, and specializes in drinks, and usually music but perhaps has no real kitchen, while a tapcaf was more a dining/drinking establishment -- like a pub.

oddly i never associated tapcafes with caff/coffee...

    just my views..

Yeah...I never quite associated tapcafe with "caf" either. I always sort of imagined a tapcafe as a casual dining establishment (think Applebee's or Chili's).

i thought perhaps a little seedier than a chain bar and grill.. i can't quite see Han wanting to meet old smuggling buddies at Applebee's. hey Badure, did you try these awesome onion things?

I never really thought about it until recently, when I thought "tap," "beer on tap" -- hey, it's probably more publike and less cafelike than I thought!
