Originally, George Lucas wanted to make a new version of Flash Gordon but was unable to get the movie rights.

If Flash Gordon had been made in 1977 - to the same standard as ANH - do you think there would have been an ongoing franchise of Flash Gordon movies instead of Star Wars?

Maybe. If they or it had been half as successful then we'd supposedly have seen more personal art films from him since then. That was always the intent. Make money from Flash Gordon so he could finance his own films without creative interference.

One thing's for sure - we wouldn't have gotten that load of rubbish in 1980 with the Queen soundtrack.

It probably would have made a big splash in the 70's but just another foot not in cinema today.George Lucas would have most likely moved onto Apocalypse Now after and had a generally good career, but I can't imagine it would have reached the incredible highs that Star Wars turned out to be.

    Huh?

Not quite that accurate to claim people would not have known him. He was already somewhat popular after his success with American Graffiti, so making a Flash Gordon series was in the range of becoming just as, if not more popular than Star Wars.

    American Grawhati?

There's a chance a Flash Gordon remake would have shot Lucas and all the corresponding companies into the stratosphere of cultural knowledge. But I doubt it.

We would have never received the masterpiece that is The Star Wars Holiday Special.
