Some insiders say that, to protect the surprise ending, Lucas had David Prowse say "Obi Wan is your father", instead of "I am your father". But other reports have him saying a much more interesting fake line: "Obi Wan killed your father".
Considering that it is true, from a certain point of view, what do you think Luke's reaction could have possible been if that had been the line used in the film?
I know what many of you will say, Luke probably wouldn't have believed it, at least not without any way to comfirm the accusation, but what if he did believe it? I think it would have been a cool twist to the story, might have pushed Luke further to the dark side.

i think the "Obi Wan killed your father" might have a little more impact on Luke coming from Darth Vader than "Obi Wan is your Father."

Hoo boy this is deep. But I love philosophizing Star Wars.

I don't know where to begin. Ok, "Obi Wan killed your Father," Luke would believe. If you keep the same believing and understanding effects, Luke will always have known, as it turns out. So, when Darth Vader says this, Luke will believe Darth Vader, and he will go to the dark side, believing he was betrayed by Obi-Wan. But also for the aforementioned line to be true, Obi-Wan couldn't have sacrificed himself on the first Death Star, he would want to keep himself alive to hide the truth from Luke. All of this is assuming that Obi-Wan knew from ANH, it was his doing that ultimately turned Darth Vader.

Yea, it would be more teen angst than My So Called Life. Kinda like how you're wishy washy on whose side you're on when your parents get divorced.

You know, from a certain point of view that statement is true.

Anakin did fall into the lava pit while fighting with Obi-Wan, and what emerged from the lava was a shattered husk of a man that became Darth Vader. Anakin Skywalker was dead at that moment, only to reemerge in Return of the Jedi.

What if he had said "I got it on with your mama"
Again, from a certain point of view, it's true, and it would have elevated the trash talking to a new level.
And don't worry, that wasn't a spoiler, just speculation based on the same info we've been reading for 10 years.

"Vader killed your father" - good man, trustworthy, teaches you the basics of the Force.

"Obi-Wan killed your father" - evil dude, killed your mentor and nearly stopped you from blowing up the Death Star

    Who would you believe?

He believed Vader when he said, I am your father. They both seem like they would be equally difficult to believe.

If that was true then Star Wars would be corny if you ask me.

I thought it was only in the ROTJ novel. Oh well, perhaps it is in both.

Either way it's not a spoiler, especially since Lucas reserves the right to change that situation from the ROTJ novel. Should he change it, then it would be a spoiler.

I'd believe Vader, if it were the truth. Luke seemed to sense Vader wasn't lying in ESB. Vader says "Search your feelings," and realization hits him harder then.

This is a neat topic for speculation. :) We've already agreed that the Jedi in the OT have become Sith-like, working in secret and using deceit to get Luke to achieve the ends they desire. Maybe the Jedi would have taken it a step further and killed to achieve their ends, too.

If that were the case, it would still make sense for Obi-Wan to sacrifice himself to protect Luke on the DS. He might want Luke to seem him doing these things and accept on faith that he was a good person so Vader's revelation wouldn't impact Luke so strongly.
