I am looking to invest in a internet security / anti-virus software. From what I have read so far - Norton, Kaspersky and BitDefender are considered the best.

    Currently using Microsoft Security Essentials.

So, what do you use & recommend?

I use a combination of Windows Defender, Avast, CCleaner, and Spybot.

    Never failed me so far.

No need to spend your money. Microsoft Security Essentials (Defender for Windows 8), Malwarebytes, and common sense are all you need.

I've used Norton for years. Currently running Norton Internet Security on two Windows 7 laptops. (It's a 3-license version).

I work in IT in a support role and have no reason to recommend McAfee as it has often missed detections made by other security software.

Norton / Kaspersky are great in detecting but both can be resource intensive.

ESET Nod is a great product too and I can recommend that as highly as Kaspersky.

Protection isn't always down to the user. I've seen reputable websites injected with malware which then compromised a couple of office computers...

When I have to fix an infected machine I use malware bytes and ccleaner, after running a system restore within windows

I use Norton only because it came with my computer, and the last time I removed a Norton product from my computer it trashed my system. So I just pay those jerks instead, though I would prefer to use something with a lighter footprint.

It's probably fine, but I did it once with like... Norton 2006 or something and it murdered explorer. Like, the computer would start with a wallpaper and nothing else. No start menu, no file browser, nothing. You had to use ctrl+alt+del or windows+r to manually run programs, which was really awkward and half of the things didn't work. And neither Norton nor Microsoft could help me fix it, so I just had to reinstall my OS from scratch.

Yeah Norton was as bad as the aol software for screwing things up or being as hard to remove as possible. Free av such as avg and avast made a dent in their user base so they had to adapt I guess.

Many AV vendors including Symantec (who make Norton) and McAfee have free removal tools available which a quick Google will find.
