Yeah, I wasn't seeing it as a value judgment. If anything, it's an underpinning to a lot of norms (like the whole SFW idea, or not goofing off in the workplace in general).

Or, you know, a prison that Jeremy Bentham came up with, Foucault didn't like, and ISIS wrote the best album of all time about?

Eh, I think there's some inescapable interplay between holding the value and the reinforcement of the value in a power structure, so you have to accommodate it, but it's also worth noting that in Discipline and Punish it is expressed as a modern conception. Consequently there's wiggle room for the importation of pre-existing values.

    Hell yeah.

Ah yes, ISIS. Was that before or after their beheading phase?

i feel its unlikely Moviefan2k4 understands the distinction between a radical leftist and "the Liberal Left"

I for one mock Americans for thinking liberals are the left.

Well, that really depends on what you mean by liberals and the left, surely. Classical liberals are probably part of the right today, but they were decidedly left-wing when the term was invented during the French Revolution. And Americans don't use liberal to refer to classical liberals anyway -- American liberals are European center-right types.

I guess what we like most about objectivity is arguing about what it is.

my impression is that the vast majority of this thread is less "arguing about what objectivity is" and more "stark disbelief and bewilderment at Moviefan2k4's confident and increasingly bizarre pronouncements about the nature of objectivity"

Well we spent the majority of the thread defining it for one person who could have just been ignored...

So... waste of time and avoidance of the topic, yes?lol

Iello, I don't agree they're centre-right at all. The entire point of liberalism is that it's pretty much dead centrist. It might be radical, but it's still a radically centrist idea.

So how are you defining logic there in that second question in the OP? That's more up my alley.

i admit that i, too, kind of assumed panopticon was a concept that every college grad was at least passingly aware of. apparently its just people who have studied philosophy and/or the social sciences. i will share your cell in the ivory tower

We should throw a party - but a sensible one, lest we invoke the wrath of the observer that may or may not be watching us.

for furtherance of this minor sidetrack: the most obvi/frequently-invoked application of the panopticon today is the proliferation of security cameras in society, particularly great britain
