What is that black blob by Palpatine's right eye in ROTJ.

The problem with the blobs on Palpatines hood is that once you've seen them, you can never watch the scenes in the same light.

Freaked me first time I saw them!

 

It would be cool if they actually added black leeches crawling over Palpatine´s face! Is he rotten or is he rotten?

Can there be a serious answer to this question.

Does anyone know the answer to this - why it is there and what it is still doing there?

My assumption has always been that it is covering up a Palpatine makeup defect (or assuring that there's sufficient shadow under the hood just because), but I've never seen any factual source describing the true reason.

 

The mysterious "Force Slug" will make an appearance in Ep. 3
No doubt it's presence is what changes Palpatine's face into his ROTJ look.
