One thing I have noticed is that we tend say who the greatest film compooser is, but I was wondering what people believed the greatest movie soundtrack of all time is, and why it is so. Have fun.

There are a (very) few better ones, but my favorite is Conan the Barbarian.

I have a few....but if I were to choose, it would be The Matrix Trilogy scores. I really love Don Davis's style for those scores. I know I'm biased when it comes to the Matrix scores but still...that's what I've loved a lot lately and have listened to the most than any other scores that I have.

Wow, I'm the first to say a Star Wars score?

I would have to say The Empire Strikes Back. So many memorable themes were introduced: Yoda's Theme, Han Solo & the Princess, the Imperial March; plus wonderful cues like Lando's Palace, The Asteroid Field, and the marvelous End Title. The perfect score, in my book.

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark is up there, too. The Raiders March never ceases to amaze me.

What a hard question, but one I've thought about for quite awhile. It's pretty much a three-way tie between Braveheart (because of my unabashed love of everything concerning the movie), Legends of the Fall, and the Return of the King score. My mood generally dictates which one is the greatest at which time. :)

I'd have to say its a tossup between Empire, Once Upon a Time in the West, Once Upon a Time in Amerca and Fistful of Dynamite.

I just can't put any of these OVER the other.

ESB, but RotJ isn't far behind (just like my preference in movies).

Psycho is the best all-time movie score.

But West Side Story is my favorite soundtrack. :p

For me, it's a toss up between The Empire Strikes Back and Superman: The Movie.

I, personally, have to go with The Empire Strikes Back. It was my favorite score when I first started listening to movie music and, years later, it's still my favorite. A close second would have to be E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.

I hate to do it, simply because he's the popular and obvious choice, but I have to hand it to John Williams and his ability to perfectly suit the needs of these kinds of films with his music.

If you go by polls done over the years by Billboard and other magazines and media, GREASE is usually #1 for movie soundtracks or at least the most popular by majority vote. The SOUND OF MUSIC is always right up top as well.

Personally ANH's soundtrack is my favorite. Always has been, always will be.

[[That's awesome that you like the KRULL soundtrack. I own it myself as well as the movie, which is easily in my top 10 all-time favorites. Very underrated movie and soundtrack. One of the best sword & sorcery/fantasy movies ever made.]]

Eh, it's not a technically brilliant score, but for some reason, I find myself listening to the TRON score by Wendy Carlos more than any other. So that gets my vote.

Nah, Grease, West Side Story, and Sound of Music don't count in my book as movie soundtracks, as they were stage musicals first

I'd say the Return of the King soundtrack, but ESB isn't far behind at all.

The Nightmare Before Christmas isn't the greatest but it's way up there.
